gday from tassie
« on: December 29, 2012, 11:05:40 pm »
Gday guys.

Ive been riding bikes since I was 5, raced C grade MX in my teens (in the 80's), and had an assortment of dirt bikes over the years.

Haven't had a bike for a few years now due to limited finances, but recently bought a 1982 XL500R for $1200.
I have stripped it down, and now in the process of building her back up, and hopefully having a race with it in VMX.

Welcome aboard Adam. I've got one of those XL500's tucked away behind the garden shed, waiting for it's eventual rebirth as a racer of some sort. Mine's an 80 model. Enjoy the build mate.

G'day Adam!
I'm also from (close to anyway) Launceston. Been out of VMX for a while now as the the old road bike thing has got me again. Had an XL500SB back in the day which I did the half tour of Oz on, not a bad old beast.
Got any pics of your project?

Gday mate

This is how it started:

and this is how it looks at the moment, lol.

Talking about road bikes, I did think about going the motard route with this one.

A bit more progress on the XL

Cleaned the frame up and coated with ceramic enamel.
Likewise with the engine.

You are at the best part adam 8) The start of putting it all back together and remebering what was this bolt for and where did it go ;D

Its my favorite part of a new project , putting all the new shiney bits back on it and seeing it all come together.
Those XL,XR500 are a good compact donk and punch out enough horses for most of us to handle.
Keep up the good work adam ;)

Thanks Mick

Yea, its a bit of a jigsaw puzzle at the moment.
Originally I was thinking of doing a full on restoration, but I thought, I dont really want a show pony, more of a go pony.
So its going to be more of just a tidy up with a few new shiney bits.

Later on I would love to do a ground up resto on something, probably a pre 80's bike. But at the moment I just want to get on the track asap and get amongst it.
