What's your parts interchange knowledge?
« on: December 17, 2012, 09:15:32 pm »
I figure there would be a lot helpful & interesting information floating around the heads of you guys; it would be great to share it.

What brought this matter to my attention, I needed new clutch plates in my KX250A5, I use to be the National Service Manager for the Australian Benelli importers about 10 years ago, Benelli in Italy sent some uprated clutch plates for the TRE900 roadbike that we were selling, I noticed that these plates had 'KA4' stamped on the tang, anyone with Honda spare parts knowledge will know that the KA4 code is for a mid 80's CR250.  Well I'd had these plates hiding down the back of the garage for the last 10 years and thought maybe the plates in a CR250 may just fit the KX ...... well they are perfect  :-)

They came in a packet marked KX250 :o

Think clutch plate interchangeability comes not from the motorcycle manufacturer but from the clutch manufacturer namely FCC in Japan

This is all great stuff , but it should be saved under a special new heading " Part Interchange "  . I started one years ago for the XS 650 . But if everyone kept contributing to one communal bank it would grow into something priceless . The initial layout would need to be sorted thoroughly , to accommodate it all and let it grow .  Because manufactures share as many common parts as possible . Keihin , Showa , Nissin ,KYB  etc

Yep that's what I was hoping for Walter.

That sounds like a great idea!

Probably needs someone who is a trained parts interpreter and who has the time, expertise and the know how, to set it up in an easy to read
form.
I figure that could be a time consuming exersize which would actually be worth a lot of money in book sales or web site.
 cheers pancho.
dont follow me i'm probably off line!

This is a great initiative that would be beneficial to all of us. I don't pretend to know how to set up the architecture of the section but I see it like a mini version of the Marque Remarks section with different areas for the different marques. While interchangeable part numbers would be the main focus of the section I can see a place for a lot of left field stuff such as ESO/Jawa speedway crankshafts fitting Matchless G80's or even what Chinese pit bike parts fit what vintage motocrosser, for example: Chinese fatty footpegs to suit Honda CRF 50/70/90 models bolt straight onto a DT1 (and possibly later) Yamaha. The possibilities are endless to the point that some bikes for which parts are almost unprecurable could now be reborn with bits from something else, it's all win/win.
