Yammie Pre~90 125 Eligible?
« on: December 16, 2012, 09:53:13 pm »
Howdy all,
i've just been offered what looks to be a 1990 YZ125,
it's too good a deal to pass up on but after reading through our lovely MOMs,
all i can see is that lovely generic rule about,
"the only exception is where the model remains unaltered"
so to all you wise Pre~90 buffs out there,
how different is the 1990 YZ125 from the 1989 YZ125?
and would it be allowed into the Pre~90 class? as a flow on model?
thanks in advance... :)

The only visible differences between the 89 and 90 models were the red forks and
some white stripes on the side of the seat cover.
Get a new 89 seat cover and hunt around for some cheap
second hand 89 forks on ebay (plenty about) and your all set for racing
in the pre 90 class  ;D

thanks Andrew,
apart from those differences and the engine frame numbers, i'm not up to speed with any real differences as to whether it would comply as a flow on model or not.
but a $100 complete bike is a bit hard to pass up on :)

Yeah, sorry.
I had a quick look through Zedder for you but the frame, crankcase, crank, cylinder and swingarm all came up as 90 model only.
Hubs were 90 model plus
The differences may be minor and most parts may still be very much the same but I came up with nothing conclusive for you.

Hey Vandy,
90 engine internals are different.Different piston & cylinder design.
Adjustable rebound on forks.
I still have the 89 yz125 I bought off you sitting here. Does look a bit better though now...

thanks Whitey,
it was a bit of dejavu looking at this thing after i sold that other one off to you.
i'll probably still get this one as it's complete with good shock/fork chrome, just has the top end off it in a box.
so if the engine internals are different i'd guess that'd be a "NO" for pre~90 as a flow on.
was that spare cylinder in that box of goodies a 90 model?

$100? Just buy it, ya mug!

i'm right on it ya mug!

I would have to agree with you on that one. Yeah, that cylinder is off va 90 model. The young fella down the road bought a 92 with a destroyed top end. Guess where that cylinder is going?
That should fund buying a 89 cylinder core for me...
If you dont want the 90, i'll buy it lol!

I dont think the scrutineers go to that extreme and check engine frame numbers to see if its a later model at club days.
They might check the numbers at national events where we are all racing for sheep stations. ;D
thanks Andrew,
