Junior JAP with 250cc engine.
« on: December 11, 2012, 08:25:55 pm »
At the Annual Vintage Picnic at Camden nr Sydney was on show a junior JAP with 250cc engine.
The engine looks very much like a JAP but could be a homemade engine.
Is there more information from this junior bike.

OK, after a phone call to Bill Powell, VSRA Sec, It turns out the the miniature speedway JAP was built around a two stroke motor by an old friend of mine Don Greig, an A grade Short Circuit rider of the '60s and '70s

Don's BSA slider, # 800, is on the Classic Dirt track images thread somewhere.
Like this miniature bike , Don built the frame , seat, tank, exhaust pipe and even the handlebars on the Slider himself.

Don had told me he was building this replica but I had no idea it would be this detailed, all the engine covers , push rod tubes etc are all hand fabricated by Don.
A bloody brilliant bit of home brewing, Good onya Don

Here it is with a full size JAP and Don's BSA Slider in the background

Just got off the phone to Don Greig and no, it's not a runner, when asked, Don's remark was that " I'm not that clever" I would sorta , kinda, disagree with that, because of the following.

Don built , from scratch, the frame, forks, tanks, seat, mudguards, sprockets, dummy clutch, petrol taps, twistgrip , dummy JAP timing cover, exhaust pipe etc.  The wheels are off a treadly and the barrel is a Victa lawnmower barrel with the exhaust port moved  up higher . It took him seven months to build, scaled from photos of full size JAPs,halfway through his son presented him with a small lathe which made things a bit easier and Don built it as a shed wall decoration, it now resides on the coffee table in his sun room.

No mean photographer himself, Don has some old short circuit shots that he is sending up to me so I can post them for him on Slides CDT Images thread.

Yesterday someone  told me that at that same show was also a very nice Matchless powered speedwaybike.
Hope to find out more about that one soon.

Bill Powell, VSRA sec sent me these photos of Don's mini JAP, they were sent as a pdf and I'm buggered if I can work out how to save them as a jpeg, anyhoo here goes'

The Timing side

The Drive side

Now , to give you some idea of the actual size of Don's creation, here's VSRA member, Rob Ogilvie with it

Oh and , by the way, Dutch, I've tracked down the owner of the Emmot Matchless powered Speedway bike, so I'll contact him and see if I can get hold of a photo.
