Rod Sharp
« on: December 11, 2012, 01:45:17 pm »
Just read this in Scooter News...

It is with deep regret, I announce the passing of Rod Sharp (Works) who passed away at the age of 53 on Thursday 6th of December after a long battle with illness. He passed away peacefully at the Alfred Hospital with his family around him. He was a respected motorcycle racer, mechanic, engineer and tuning specialist that a lot of people in the motorcycle industry have benefitted from his expertise. But most of all, he was a great bloke and friend. Sincere condolences to his parents Gwen and Huey, and his brothers Gary, Murray and Brendon. R.I.P Works Funeral details will be announced when confirmed.

He always had some underlying health problem but he always soldiered on.
RIP Rod

Rod Sharp was another talented guy, also an A grader but I can’t remember how high he got.
In 86 I couldn’t get my KDX 200 set up properly and after it ‘swapped’ me off the side of a cliff I took it to Trevor Flood Racing where Rod was working.
He told me to bring the whole bike down, not just the forks and shock.
We talked about the bike for a bit and then he put his hand on the seat and pushed the rear end down a few times and told me my swingarm bearings were dry.
I thought to myself ‘bloody wanker’, thinks he can bullshit me.
I had been religiously pumping grease into the grease nipples until it squirted out past the seals after every major ride.
He told me I needed to have new springs and both ends revalved.
I told him I would think about it and went back home.
The following weekend I sat looking at the bike somewhat disillusioned about what to do.
Eventually curiosity got the better of me and I pulled the swingarm out to check it.
Well bugger me if the swingarm bearings weren’t dry.
The grease I had been pumping in had found a path past the bearings and then out past the seals.
All the grease I had been pumping in was doing nothing but deceiving me.

Rod had won me over there and then and I have also never believed in grease nipples since that day.
The work he did on my suspension was brilliant and I took my next bikes straight to him after running them in.

Another email has come through from the ORCC with a message from Rod's brothers looking for stories and photos for his funeral this Friday - maybe you have something to contribute?  An email address is provided below.  Cheers Steve

"Many thanks to Danny Williams for notifying you all of the death of my dear brother, Rodney (Works) Sharp. Myself, Brenden and Murray (Rod's three brothers) are organising the service for "Works" on Friday 14th Dec.

His passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill and we will all miss him sorely while knowing that he is still somewhere there providing inspiration and some sparkling memories that will never be forgotten.

To describe and document Rod's extraordinary life for inclusion in the service we are asking you to respond to [email protected] by sending your best photos of Works'y.

We can provide many shots and stories of early childhood and family times, but would really like to see some great shots and stories about the go-to motorbike guy and sportsman that we all admired and loved dearly.

Have a think about it and see what you can come up with !!

A service to say farewell to Rodney (Works) Sharp of Chirnside Park  will be held on FRIDAY (Dec. 14) at 3 p.m. in The William Matthews  Funeral Home, 45 Cave Hill Rd, Lilydale. If desired in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alfred Hospital envelopes will be
available at the Chapel. CREMATION
 Regards,
 Gary, Brenden & Murray Sharp"

Very sad to hear of Rod's passing. I restored a 495 KTM a few years back, Rod was terrific with his help and had some great stories too, he really left a big impression on my son. The bike fraternity has lost a top bloke.
