YZ125D frame
« on: November 19, 2012, 05:10:11 pm »
Just picked up a YZ125D

Looks real stock and needs a clean up.

My question is what is best for the frame 2 PAC paint or powder coat.

What did they come with when new??

Any help would be great :)

Yep that's the bike.

It seems pretty original but I over looked that both rims are badly corroded.

Do you know the bike?

Most people go for paint - powder coat tends to go on too thick, and can cause hassles with refitting motor (etc) as well as looking crap. Plus a broken edge of powder coat can allow moisture in, which can cause corrosion to 'tunnel' under the surface.

They were originally painted.

Show us a pic of the rims, unless you're certain they're buggered. The usual problem with Yamaha wheels of this age is the DID rims cracking, particularly at the join.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

ive seen a few rims that corrode internally quite badly but look find on the outside, perhaps cleaned too often at the car wash as 1800psi gets past seals/spokes/valve stems and rimlocks easily

These are worse they have great big holes in the side about 6" long

I think it was in water or something.

If you look close at the picture you can see it on the front wheel near the fork

a good powder coater will look as good as paint, and will out perform paint.

unfortunately most just whack it on as thick as they can.

It was fun !!!

It is by no means a A grade restoration, just a clean up. I just want to get it going for the race season.
I am going to take off the stock bars and put renthals on it and a different throttle.

Nice to have the photos with the stock gear though

I would like to buy another and do a real nice restoration maybe that's next  :)

The throttles are now NLA so don't throw it . There will be people on here that will want to buy for that  full resto .  When I started the amount of stuff I ditched has given me a heart ache  . Iain
