So are we assuming (or knowing) that 7k would get it?

Ahh auction psychology  :( :(  Why list it with such ridiculous first bid price?  By ridiculous I mean so far from what he reportedly would sell for.

Doesn't help buyers to know if the seller is serious or calibrate if the buyer is dreaming. Just wastes everyone's time in my opinion. It's not like he is going to get heaps of genuine bidders so why doesn't he set a price that he would sell for and let buyers bid it up from there? Or is it just a fishing trip to see where is reserve sits in the market? Bring back the classifieds section in Saturdays paper ;D ;D

Rickman Metisses are one of the few VMX bikes that have largely retained their value during the lean financial times. Having said that, this is a really nice pre unit Triumph Metisse but it's only a 10k bike in my opinion. The Matchy is more desirable than the Triumph but I'd baulk at 12k for it.
