alloy rims in pre 75
« on: August 13, 2007, 04:38:55 pm »
just wondering are alloy rims other than mud catcher allowed in pre 75 if so would any one have a front 21" 36spoke rim or wheel (only rim is needed)  and rear 18" 36spoke rim or wheel (only rim is needed) laying around they wish to get rid of.
thanks guys ;)

PRe 75 means just that, it dont have to be off your model bike.  TM suzuki etc had alloy rims and they wherent muddies, pre 75 just not Anodised blue.  nothing stopping you using a nice akront or sun rim from a wreckers even off a roady so long as it 36 hole your in business.  IF your desperate just get an old Dt set OK they maybe steel but its rolling weight so who cars your inbusiness - at least your riding the thing and not looking at it in the shed, and then when you find some you can swap em over down the track.  PS, get a spare rear set up as a spare anyway so a ready to go steely ready to drop in with tyree is worth taking to every race met, i can change a puncture to save my life, and i have a habit or messing with the spokes, usuualyy  and stupidly just befor ethe next race....patingggg. Doh

Peeps only get anal on PRe 75 suspension and motors, the rest of its just stuff if you could buy it or its a close enought repro of somthing i could buy over the counter in xmas 74, you knock yourself out, otherwise we would still be chasing those stuppid waffle grips, just to be able to compete in the class.

and however new you like ;)
newer excel rims are beeeeautiful although if you chasing 'used' newer rims a lot of the stuff to suit later 90/2000 models won't work because the nipples are much bigger hence the nipples holes are much bigger, so steer clear unless it's from an older model with said holes 8) weigh up some tyres too, what you save in rim weight you can easilly put back on using a heavy tyre, same goes for the rear, don't go overly big..there's a lot of merit in having lower unsprung weight especially when it comes getting the bike to go around corners 8)

The challenge will be finding a set that isn't cracked... That era YZ DID rims are rubbish - uncracked ones are rare.

Firko's nailed it, but there are no restrictions on colour (except for good taste, of course).

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Just last week I went thru the new versus the old saga myself  ??? and ended up buying a new set of excel universal rims that suit the early nipple sizes  :)
The spoke angles where spot on as well, which comes into play when swapping rims on hubs

125 for a spoke kit is a good price per wheel.
basically,  for me,  if you are a rece ready over concourse, then you have more choice.  Chivos in Granville has good imported rims that will match any hub.
Spokes, well thats a different thing.  Most should be fine apart from my '84 YZ490 which uses ZSpokes (less spokes, but go right thru)
If you want DID then you better start putting in a high bid.
