Early Broadford Motor Cross

I thought that these photo`s were from the Australian Motocross Titles in 1978 at Broadford.
I am a little unsure as it looks like Graeme Smythe is on a YZ400F. Check out the crowd it was a big meeting.
Found these Photo`s also. This was an open meeting and the main players were Mark Hill & Mike Landman. Someone forgot to tell Gary Flood to slow down as he hosed both of them. I can`t remember when this was.

Cool shots... Smythe is on a 400F. The titles were always late in the year and often the sponsored riders would get next years model early for the Aussie title.
I think it was the same meeting in 78 where Mike Landman got a pre production YZ125F and won the Aussie title.

edit for Mont: the track back then looks wide open,with a big paddock for good spectator viewing across all corners.Half of what it used to be or it maybe the scope of lens on the old camera.Alot tighter now days.
More off the cuff info, Stephan Gall won his first 125cc Dirt Track Title at Fairburn Park Canberra in the same year these pics where shot  :)

I thought I was correct, but I needed some backup on the YZ400F.
I spent that day in the pits with Bernie Ryan and it was the first time I had seen Rose Tint Polaroid Lenses for Scott Goggles. As a mini bike rider, but spectator at the time I felt sad for Roger Fricke as he led the first heat of the 125 up until I think the second last lap by quite a margin, and was unfortunate to break off his gear lever and drop out. In the Northern Centre Roger was our hero. He rode like Bob Hannah, footpegs optional.

There is film of that event ,saw it a CD4 ,some riders were on E models and some like Gall and Smythe had the early F models.

Awesome start /Main straight flat out all the way up the hill . Love the spark plug bus .

Good comparison GMC. The track looked wider earlier on. The old back straight down the hill off the big jump was changed after the South Australian rider Danny ( can`t remember his last name ) was killed when he lost control down the straight and cartwheeled into the Glenmix sign. Can anyone remember that ? That is now 2 deaths at this motocross track.

The main straight was 70 mph off the first jump and the back straight was something like 85mph. I last rode a YZ490 #23 there in A Grade and I can tell you that you new you were on the edge at those speeds.

Danny Reilly was the South Australian killed, I didn't realise it happened at Broadford. I can recall riding at the '83 Mr MX at Broadford and Trevor Williams had a huge crash at the end of that downhiil straight and was lucky to walk away...

Yes it was Danny Reilly , they used to have the Danny Reilly memorial race in SA for some years and yes he died after crashing at a Race at Broadford but I heard that is was not at the track,it was some days later from the head injuries that he sustained in the crash.

Those more recent shots are still quite a few years old I think?  There is more grass now and different jumps.
