Wanted '74 and onwards swingarm
« on: September 16, 2012, 07:33:46 pm »
Guy's,

We're starting to rebuild the 73 250 and are looking for a stronger swingarm then the original 73 ones..

Just wondering if anyone has a spare swingarm they would part with or if there is any other options available. Not too keen on the box section arms on CR high performance and dont think a thor type one would suit it but any other mods or options would be great to know of.  :)

thanks Carl.

Pete,I have had a GMC swingarm since the beginning of this year and would thoroughly recommend this product.A friend of mine who is a much better rider than me took it out at Conn Classic and said the rear end was bloody fantastic (wasn't too happy about the front end which has tired old springs).Given that 74 swingarms are hard to find and can be quite expensive(i looked for over a year and found only one which I missed out on)I went this way and am glad I did.Keep your dollars in Oz and Mr Morris in beers and pies ;)

Shortshifter,

Thanks for the heads up on the swingarms. I bought this bike so my 18yo son could do his own full resto - his way. Only thing is I have to fund it. So far so good. I will give them a call today. Web shows the GMC swingarm is over $600 AUD.  That might be stetching the CZ budget a bit at the front end....

Pete and Carl, you probably already know but whichever way you go you will need a longer axle to suit as the later swingarms are wider.Great to hear about another CZ being built.

shorty,

No we didn't know about the axle width so thanks so much for the heads up. The CZ is coming apart as I type. Carl is bagging and tagging it now. Plenty to do albeit basically 100% complete and original. But age does just take its toll.

Will keep you posted

The longer rear axle has a reputation of being easier to bend due to being not as supported, the amount of axle taken up inside the swingarm is quite a bit more
The spacer tube has to be shortened to fit inside the swingarm & the torque arm for the brake is different as well

I haven't heard of that problem so far but its something ill be aware of, I might be able to manufacture something to make it all work but that's good to know anyway. I guess there would be problems with either swingarm's and set ups..

Shortshifter if you could possibly post a photo or two of the gmc swingarm that would be greatly appreciated just so we can get an idea of what they look like.

The reputation for bent axles is from america, looks like they run on permanent tracks most of the time
The 73 & earlier swingarm is meant to be a bit more flexible, a combination of the curved cross brace & squashed tube for the axle mounts but not being fast enough to feel it or having used the later setup on my bike I can't really comment either way.
May have to take up the offer of a loaner 74 arm at some stage just to see if I do notice any difference

Okay I can see the 73 swingarm would be a bit more flexable compared to the later model one but I'm not totally sure the axles would be bending unless the Americans are racing supercross.. It's all good to know hear boys.

On the other end of the bike, would anyone happen to know if it's possible to buy the magnesium to triple clamp like the works bikes had in the day? like in the link below:

Billet triple clamps are easily gotten from CR & CZstuff but the only place that may be able to supply the magnesium top clamps would be Jiri Starec, won't be cheap if you can find one though

Yeah I've seen them on CR look trick, I might try and contact Jiri and see what he says. Knowing what they are they're not going to be cheap. thanks Tony
