If the D is a 5 speed and the E a 6 so it's not a follow on model

Hmmmm, if it's a 5 speed, then it must be a D model, not an E model then....  Or maybe a D model motor in an E model frame?  Is it matching numbers?

Havent bought the bike yet only have seen pictures of it, was told it was a 5spd but who no's untill seen, if it was able to be ridden pre78 could have been a possibilty but its not looking likly will still go and look at it anyway. Thanks for all of your input very helpfull

When it comes to IT250 D & E models they where identical. 5 speed for both and generally all the same apart from engine and chassis numbers.
To club race it, it would certainly eligable to ride and I'd challenge any one to pick the difference (apart from stickers???).

The YZ250D and the YZ250E are two completely different engines in two mildly different frame. The IT's and YZ"D" share the same cases and barrell. The YZ250"E" engine is nothing like the "D".

Ride in the pre 78 club races and enjoy! When you start passing other riders you'll enjoy it more.......

the it250 d is a 5 speed ,it is the same gearbox as used in yz400 d and e. the 5 speed was not the ideal ratios for trail so they improved it in 78 it250 e by using a 6 speed with more useable ratios

Now I feel like a goose. I was sure that the 250D and E  where both 5 speeds but now I just checked my old parts book the E is a 6 speed. Everything else is the same including the cases. Now that is a strange one.

Hi I'm restoring an IT250D (cheapskates YZ250D  ;D) to ride pre78 with classic scamble club here in victoria. The main differences from the YZ is the shorter suspension travel, minor changes to porting and of course the gearbox ratios,  none of which will change your enjoyment of racing at club level. Go for it mavman!

Bought an rt3 360 so the IT will have to wait a bit longer (until the wife forgets about the rt) then ill be on the hunt again. Thanks for all the advice from everyone.
