Honda magnesium case
« on: July 08, 2012, 08:38:47 pm »
Hi everyone.
Noticed today that i have a small dent in the magnesium clutch cover on my Honda CR500 84 model
and the clutch basket is just touching and rubbing against it which has caused starting problems as well.
(the gear at the back of the clutch basket has way too much movement causing kick start slippage).
Sooo can i get this clutch cover fixed or should i start hunting around for a second hand one??
Also while im at it can the gear at the back of the clutch basket be repaired, it looks like it just needs new bushes
and pivots...???
Any info on this would be much appreciated.
Cheers Andrew

From the little i know Andrew. I believe the cases are difficult or even pointless to weld due to the material  , Most use devcon or similar which will work. As for the outer gear, i believe it and the basket are all one part and if it is shagged u may have to replace the basket. But double check the above as i am not 100% sure. One thing is for sure the basket should not have enough play to hit the case, so i would be pulling the whole thing off and checking the bearings etc. I do have a spare motor if you get stuck for parts and may be able to help.

You can test the stator windings, you will need the specs & a multimetre,or remove the complete sytem ,CDI,coil, stator windings & flywheel & send to someone like Small coil rewinds, tell em whats happening, they will put the lot on a special rig & test for problems,I assume you have fitted a new plug, cleaned the carb, fresh fuel, good top end etc?

Ohh and i shouldve mentioned it earlier that this problem started just before i made al these changes.
Has anyone used a PVL ignition on this model bike ??
