DVD CHRISTMAS HILLS AND SHORT CIRCUIT
« on: June 28, 2012, 03:05:27 pm »
Stephen Eastham who manufactures seats and fibreglassing down here in Melbourne has gone to the trouble and expense of transfering some silent film onto DVD from the early 70's. He's asking $10 a copy.I was never hugely into short circuit which is the majority of the content but I got my $10 worth just viewing the Xmas Hills bit with Slider 29 featuring in his first ever MX. Let me know if your interested. Cheers Jerry

Howdy Blokes,  The dvd Jezza is talking about is pretty cool ;D The xmas hills scramble was my 1st ever race. I had just turned 16 and had a 125 tm .  My old man said if you have a race bike you might as well race!! So off we go to xmas hills which was only 30 min away. Roll into the pits, unload etc.,don't know anybody, ask a few questions and get told to see Wes Brown. He was in charge. I hadn't entered but he said i could ride and i paid my fee. Because i was ungraded he stuck me in the 125 all grades race and said just follow them around till you get the hang of it. Yeah right!
Down the straight for the 1st time saw an end to that!!
The other footage is of Cambellfield grasstrack with some footage of Ray Owen(don't blink) and Harry Rowe on side car. A couple of nice Bultaco Metisse' in there as well. I think it's great .     We also have stuff from Griffith, Narranderra, Young, West Wyalong and oz titles at St Kilda S.A.  It is a work in progress ;D regards  Mark

Which OZ titles Mark, 70 or 74?
The 74 meeting was my brother Carl's last ever Short Circuit meeting.
I'll grab a copy as well.

Mark, was it a Grand National meeting at Christmas Hills? The reason I ask is the 73 GN was my first race meeting and 74 was my first GN race.

Regards Stan.

The 68 titles were at Salisbury S.A. with Greg Primmer winning, 70 was at St Kilda with a win for Bill Mcdonald and 74 it was back at ST Kilda and Keith Davies won.
Info courtesy of Jim Scaysbrook's great book, Australia's Motorcycling Heritage.

Stan, it was just a standard open meeting at Xmas Hills.
Slides, there are some wires crossed about the '68 titles being at Salisbury or St Kilda.
I was there and it was a shit hole of a place out on the salt flats. It was also a fair way out of town. Dave Basham won a couple of titles,..350 and 250. It has always been referred to St Kilda in our household. My whole family went over along with Harry Rowe and Dave Howard (they came 3rd in sidecar) and we stayed at my Aunties place. They all referred to it as St Kilda . On the film cannister is St Kilda 1968 S.A.  As i said it was a shit place, a shit track and stinking hot . I have also googled it and where we went was St Kilda.   ?????????????????

Fair enough Mark, I'm only going on what's printed in Scaysie's book but you were actually there, I went in 74 and remember it being near a salt flat and a tip, which is where the toilet seat came from back in 70. Dave Basham won the 250 & 350 classes in 68.
3 OZ title meetings at the same track in 6 years, not a bad effort.
