KX 125's - 78 & 79
« on: June 15, 2012, 04:46:04 PM »
How different are the 78 & 79 KX 125’s?
In relation to the chambers & mufflers
According to Zedder the mufflers are the same but I was bit surprised to see that the muffler also fits the KX 250.

Part # = 18001-1017-21
Part Description = MUFFLER ASSEMBLY,FLAT BLACK
Model Count = 3
KX125-A4 78 125 KX125 MOTOCROSS
KX125-A5 79 125 KX125 MOTOCROSS
KX250-A4 78 250 KX250 MOTOCROSS

Does any one know if the actual chambers are interchangeable or are there some differences in fitment.

It appears that the cylinders & heads are the same but not much else

That Homo comment would have added another week to your order, unfortunately they all went out in the mail on Tuesday.

Thanks but I don’t need a pipe, it’s just that I have access to a 78 KX 125.
I don’t think its worth while jigging for the 78 as they are more of a collectable, anyone rebuilding one would want a stock pipe. But then I got thinking about whether the same pipe would also fit the 79.
I have been asked a few times about 79 KX 250 pipes and I can’t recall if I have ever had anyone chasing a 79 KX 125 pipe, just wondering if I should take advantage of a situation.

interesting dilemma. you cn back it in that if you don't 6 mths down the track you wish you did.

i suppose it all comes down to time. how long does it take to jig and how much time can you spare.

Yes Hoony, that is the dilemma.
It can take anything from 2 to 7 days to set up that first pipe and then I may not sell one for 5 years.
But if I let it slip someone will want a pipe the week after it’s gone.
And no spare time and too many projects ahead as it is

So the big question is if I jig from a 78 will the pipe fit a 79?

Both bikes would benefit from a better pipe Geoff as would the 250s  ;) In 79 Jem Whatley won the British junior champs on a KX 125 A5 and his bike was fitted with an aftermarket ( or more likley factory pipe ) that was much bigger through the guts than standard .

I would be in for a pipe that offers better performance ( like your YZ 125A pipes  8) 8) 8) )

Nah, it's too hard to set up from just a pipe, especially if I'm changing the specs.
I have gotten away with it a couple of times but for the most part there are too many clearance issues to guess them.
Ideally I need a bike to work with and I have an A4 available
