I can still recall at the first VMX meeting at Amaroo in 1988 a guy on a '74 Maico 125 blitzed the 125 class in the first two motos only to blow it up while leading the third moto. The bike and its owner were never seen at a vintage meeting again
. These tiddler Maicos are indeed pretty fast, especially when fitted with the optional road race barrel. I believe they also suffered the same trans selector problems that infected Sachs and Zundapp motors of the era. I've been told that the same bloke designed all three engines so that might explain the coincidence.
