Is it ok to use Motul transoil SAE 10W40 in the gearbox of my 360 sidepipe 1969, also does it have a dry or wet clutch
cheers Pat

Should be okay to use the motul, should be a dry clutch unless someone has done the conversion to a wet clutch setup.
Easiest way to tell is look at the underside of the small cover & see if there is a small cutout along the base, this needs to be filled in to allow the sidecover to seal for the wet clutch conversion

Hi,
I have been using  Castrol VMX 80,in all my CZ's since 1968, seems to be quite good,
thats what the CZ riders manual recommends,
Are you using 20: 1 fuel to oil mix?
cheers

Just out of curiosity, you guys mentioned that your oil and fuel mixture
is at 20.1 .....
Soooo how much oil would you mix in with say 5 litres of petrol and which type of oil ???
Sorry if im offending anyone by hijacking this thread but this info is valuable to me
as i own a CZ as well... :)

Bit off topic...
Just drained the gear oil out of my CZ400 and only got 50mls ?? WTF is going on ..
Do they chew a bit of oil or is this normal ???
Been told to put in 500ml of castrol mtx 80 is this the correct amount.
Bit confused any help much appreciated.
Cheers Andrew

650mls is normal for the dry clutch

Very much doubt that the missing 600mls will be sitting in the primary drive casing, you normally have to lean them over when draining to get all the oil out. The reason being that the cases are not drilled at the lowest point which I assume is to keep more oil around the gearbox & less creating drag on the primary drive gears, the plate with the hole in it between the crank & gearbox input shaft is where the oil comes through

Lean the bike over with the screw that is generally mistaken as being to check the level removed & see how much more you get out, there is really only 2 places you could be losing oil, crank seals or into the dry clutch cover.
First place to check would be the clutch seal, pulling the cover over the clutch will tell you whether there has been large amounts of oil in there

Andrew, change the crank seal. That thing is sucking in oil as the oil was changed just before you bought it.

Tony,I have mistakenly been using the primary drive drain bolt as a level to check the amount of oil in the gearbox. How else can this be done?

I just measure out the correct amount when changing the oil, draining all the old oil out is the tricky part.
Have found the easiest & quickest way to refill the gearbox on a 4speed motor is to remove the top cover, as a bonus it gives you a chance to give the gears a quick check over
