1989 KX500 OEM Jetting Specs
« on: May 21, 2012, 11:48:29 am »
a mate has a new toy, its a 1989 US import KX500. its got a California spark arrester that is restricting it (its sounds like a 250cc enduro bike instead of a big bore MXer) and god know what specs in the Carb.

the carb may be ok once he gets rid of that horrible muffler/spark arrester, but just in case......

Anyone have the specs for Carby setup for a 1989 KX500 for a starting point ?

The parts list I can find, shows:
55 or 65 pilot (but not 60?)
and
165, 168, 170, 172, and 190 mains (again, a bg gap in the sequence - go figure)
and
R1366N, R1367N and R1368N needles.

FWIW, my 88 KX250 required significant leaning off to be happy on modern fuel. Based on that experience, I would aim for the leaner jets as the starting point (assuming your mate is smart enough to identify a lean-running two-stroke before it destroys itself...).
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.
