Old School in Canberra - A Taste of HEAVEN in 2 Weeks...
« on: March 30, 2008, 08:19:09 pm »
The ACT club ran their first club day of the season today and 8 stalwarts turned up to race the Old School class. The track looked superb and by all reports was exactly that to ride on after our favourite track prep guy gave it a thorough going over. If today was anything to go by, the HEAVEN round in 2 weeks should be a corker. Although the lads were riding hard enough to have won any world GP back in the day, the most amazing thing that I saw all day was the #166 Honda, whose rider, resplendent in new nylons, looked like he'd been born to ride it. Can you guess who he is?

Here's some pics from your intrepid on the spot photographer (who is really too wussy to ride there most of the time).

Hey, just noticed in the background. Check out that Honda rider fighting to keep the front down as the huge power rips the knobs from the tyre...

Nice to see someone else up on a Sunday night drinking.................  ;)

Great shots though, and like Mr. Billet said, that track looks really good and fairly dust free.  ;D

Yep. Dennis is quick on the KTM, but that young bloke just cleared out. It was good to see a vintage bike clearing everything on the track, and just goes to show that the bikes are capable of plenty of speed. As for the nylons, it was kinda weird seeing him out there looking all clean and new! I think he was the best dressed bloke in the field.

yeah I rented my Bike out, and He had a Ball .

He picked up a 1st Place on the KTM thats one thing that I can do.
But I still road in the Over 35s.

Not Me I Still got my Old Top One day I will win a Race.and Get a New One ????

We did some Bike swapping I road Bills KTM #151 a 1976 400 and I blew
Snowy #76 away, he was on a Honda 250 1984 .

I did not get to meet the Guy on #166 a Honda 125cc 1982 .
But gave snowy a ride on it in the Over 35's.
Snowy was in front of me for 5 laps It was not to untill the last lap I got by him .I did not want to be beaten by a Honda and not a 125cc Honda.

So the Track is at its Best so in two weeks Time Look out all you heaven
guys, you will be having a Ball.

i'm no. 21 in graeme's pics and i had a ball, despite (sorry xxxx, have to mention it) being taken out big time by the guest rider of dennis' new cr125 over a jump in the last race ('s ok....ice helped....).  he's promised me he'll go slow next round enough for me to beat him one time, so that will help too.

the track: best yet.  you heaven guys are in for a real treat.  there's twenty tons of sawdust and ten of sand been trucked in and ripped down to about a depth of half a metre.  add some decently broad sweeping corners and you got the chance to plough into em fast and hammer out wfo, each time every time.  fun plus.

Hey Twistandshout, two things;

I've never seen bigger shoulder pads - are they hockey items?
And the ice treatment; can you elaborate?

Anything to help with aches and pains is of interest to me.

Hopefully Twisty can elaborate, but yes, those are hockey pads. He claims much better design to prevent shoulder injuries.

If you want to reduce pain and strains, do a solid program of stretching during the week, with plenty of water and stretches on race day. Add in some nice gentle cool down stretches the night after and you'll be great. Very important for our ageing bits.

Thanks Graeme; I'm a big fan of stretching before and after an event.
Back in my rugby days I noticed an 'after stretch' reduced the following days aches and pains by at least 50%.
But the ice bit intrigues me... ???
and nice photos by the way.

Twisty, I didn't find the time to heed your advice so I'm really feeling it in the legs today :-[
Hey Graeme rM, there were 9 old bikes out there on Sunday - didn't you snap any pics of my ugly mug?

You know, I feel bad about that. I actually took all these pics in one frenzied session as I had to bolt off to another appointment. I tried to get everyone, but only had two laps of racing to do it in. I did get two photos of you, but they were among the 30% of pics that were absolute crap - blurry out of focus rubbish. I know it looks like I took my time and composed the photos and so on, but in fact I just pointed, shot, and did the tidy up at home in Paintshop.

Edit. OK, here they are, tidied up as best I can. You can see how bad they are, but I think it is recognisable as you!

wombat, there's a recent thread called somethingorother where i gave my usual spiel about how body armour gives just roost deflection not impact protection and how ice hockey gear is actually designed to spread shoulder impact trauma across a much wider area, so thoroughly recommend it.  and its cheap too.  the thread's around somewhere.

the ice, well after the three days of aches i had after first ACT round, i googled and found advice on the benefits of icing over-used muscles.  apparently it shrinks the blood vessels which makes them expel the built up lactic acid (wonder where it goes???).  anyway, i did just that sunday nite and the next day - no muscle soreness at all virtually - sweet.  i just stuck a bunch of icecubes in a plakky bag and got the thigh muscles nice and cold over a half hour period, and it did the trick.  stretching is a good one too.  as graeme said, you really got to use every trick in the book at our age.....
