What's your VMX Race Face?
« on: May 04, 2012, 07:00:21 am »
Hi Guys, I thought I would try one of these polls out. Flagging lately and watching the racing from that viewpoint, I have often wondered what the mix of racers is. How many people are just happy for a ride, how many want to win and how many are in between? Not sure whether I have covered all riders with my options, I guess you'll let me know if I haven't.

VMX for me has always been about having fun and enjoying the scene. I really prefer events like Classic Dirt. But since taking up modern dirt track this year I've discovered an overwhelming urge to win...

Much the same as Graeme. Wrist injury prevents me from riding Canberra, Clarence etc but I do enjoy the natural terrain tracks...Buladelah, Glenbawn and Canowindra. I probably enjoy flagging more because you get up real close to the action. And I really enjoy seeing my mates hole shot and win Pre 85 All Powers  races on  my totally uncompetitive shitbox 125 H

This is a race face

I try not to take my friends out. Fortunately they're few.

The old "Hey we're only out for a bit of fun. No need to lean on me!" wears a bit thin sometimes.
Why were you in such a hurry to get to the first corner then?

Sticking a young, fast kid on an old motocross bike and watching him win isn't really VMX......

My apologies then Ted. There are a few twenty-something year olds who try to build a career out of it. ::)

I had 30 years away from racing and when I started again 2 years ago I thought, I'll just cruise around and keep safe but it didn't take long until that competitive streak came back the racer in me was reborn.
Until 3 weeks ago when courtesy of another rider I'm now recovering from a broken leg with a new rod & 4 screws to carry around, I'm not dirty on the other rider because thats racing but thats how quickly the fun can turn to shit.
From now on my race face will be kept in the pits as a bike builder and tuner and I'm not going to worry about the age of who rides my bikes as long as they're being pedalled around by someone.

That's bad news Steve.

I chose option #3. #4, #2 and #1 also apply some of the time.

Funnily enough, since I've started racing moderns, I'm both more competitive and less serious with my VMX. I've lost interest in 'just riding around' and now go racing to race, but have also put more value on enjoying it.
That probably sounds contradictory, but it's working for me.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

That is a shocker Steve. Same thing happened to me almost 3 years ago - radial fracture of left Tib/Fib. Nice 'factory' titanium rod and screws in Tib. Took 14 weeks to get OK. The worst part was I did it all by myself in the simplest little get off during practice at a Heaven meeting without another rider in sight :-[ :-[ :-[.

Took 7 months before I was back at VMX and about four meetings to regain full confidence in it. 50+yrs bones don't mend as fast as younguns. Since then I have started riding with all the protective gear. Knee braces saved my Knee from major damage in the crash

Dont train much(can't swim like some sidecar champs) just the odd bottle of Guiness. :D
Don't practise except on raceday-or is that just a warm-up? :D
I just ride for fun-until the tapes fly (gate drops) then it's on and we run into anyone that's close enough to hit (which is never anyone-they've all flown the coop). :o :o :D :D :D
