Selling a Bike - What was that Scam that was happening ?
« on: April 30, 2012, 06:56:52 pm »
a Mate has advertised his CBR250RR roady on bikesales, he got a call from a bloke in Sydney who wants to pay by cheque and have the bike transported once he gets the owners licence photocopy and full details. i am sure there are plenty of CBR250RR's in Sydney to purchase.

i remember some scams that were/are going around, can anyone remember what the scenarios are and how they get your money after cheques or direct deposits are cleared though you bank?

it is NOT a pay-pal deal buyer wants to pay by cheque

Sounds like he wants his identity. Mate of mine sold his YZ465 to a guy in Perth. He sent a cheque for the bike & arranged transport. Mate waited till the cheque cleared & all was good but no way would I send him the details he wants unless he blacks out certain details.

Any sale of a rego'd bike will give the seller's details to the buyer.
Similarly, if I was buying a bike in these circumstances, I would want to see the seller's licence, etc before sending thousands of dollars into the wild blue yonder.

So... It would pay to be very careful, but - based on what's been said - I'm not convinced that it's a scam.

Phone calls (not texts) from phone numbers that aren't blocked, are a good start to proving theyre a non-scammer, but definitely not the be-all and end all. See if they answer calls from blocked numbers.

Maybe explain why you(r mate) is cagey about handing out all of the details, and pay careful attention to how he answers. Maybe a worthwhile deposit and let the cheque clear, before sending the details?

There was a scam involving international money transfers that could be reversed even after they'd apparently cleared into someone's account. I am unaware of anything similar with Aussie cheques, but anything is possible...

Don't recall ever showing my licence to any one that was buying from me.

I guess if he wanted to see the Rego papers would be a fair question.

I suppose from his point of view he wants to see that you’re genuine but I wouldn't be sending copies of my licence to him.

Paypal demanded I send them a copy of my licence and that made me very nervous at the time.

You give the rego papers to the buyer in NSW and ACT.
I won't buy a rego'd bike or car without seeing the seller's licence - to make sure that it's their bike/car to sell.

And most of the time, you end up at their house anyhow, so their address is hardly a secret...

Bank cheques can bounce a couple of days after presentation as sometimes they are fake....
Counterfeit cash is more common than people think
Paypal uses a cheque system sometimes also...

Moral to the story, barter could be the way of the future....
