buying up later model 2 strokes

as pretty regular reader of Dirt rider and MX Action there are a hell of a lot of pages devoted these days to scoring that cheapo Craigslist 125/250 stroker and tarting it for a grand then kicking the shit out of the local 250/450 Diesel racers.

Is it time to start stock piling the end of the line 2 strokes..... KTM and YZs are still in the game but a stash of later CRs KXs and RMs can only appreciate as everyone seems to be starting to understand just how good they were. I havn't mentioned later 500s as their values are already going balistic.

I was thinking the first diesel powered YZ400 from 98 would be collectable, but not in line with your plan.

In 10 years time they'l be the most sought after Pre2000 bike next to the YZF400
The big difference is that youll have and extra 200 cc's to eject you to the ground and bitch slap you into submission.

Ive kept my KTM 380 SX  last model , I lernt my lesson with my CR500 I sold 3 months before it became VMX legal in NZ  DUH!
 I know Ill be too old by the time the KTM is Vintage but like you say they are still better than a diesel.

I'm with you Barnzy.....I'm never selling my 00 FC501.....love it.....those TC610 Huskies are cool too......they would be the top of the line as far as diesels are concerned.....and still old school.

Without doubt the 00 FC501/4 was the best MX 4st for that year. Even by todays standards it stacks up well.
I sold mine back in 2002 but was lucky enough to get another last year to join the ex Caldecott 98 FC600 and the 99 FC501 in the garage.

You can still buy a brand new 2008 RM125 or 250 from your local Suzuki dealer.

You still semi-regularly see unused/low hour 07 CR 2-strokes for sale - They always start off at big money and lots of guff about being collectible, and after a few months, they're down to marginally more than an average used one...

Really, they're only going to climb in value when they're 'vintage' - old enough that people will buy them for nostalgia rather than their merits  a bike.
A late 90s 2T's main virtue is that it's cheap for the performance they offer. You'd never buy one if they cost the same as a five year old YZ or KTM 2T.

i also think that the YZ400F, early Husabergs are bikes to sit on, the early Bergs of the Smets era are cool.

Regarding 2 strokes, it seems that there is likely to be a movment back toward them, KTM still runs them on its enduro team and with Berg have continued to develop them. Seems like people are catching back on to their performance and cost advantage. So grabbing late model 2 strokes while everyone is still mesmerised by 4 strokes is probably not such a bad move.

Suzuki are going to sell RM 250 again in the US although they are the same as the 08 model. but the again the YZ havent really changed since 05. As I don't race and only ride in the bush and can get a YZ 250 rec reg in Vic, it's what I ride. I don't know how collectable they will be in the future. I can see 2 strokes making a come back as a buget racer/play bike. 5 years ago I would go riding and I would be the only 2 stroke in the pack now it seems it's about half and half.

All late model four stokes are hand grenades who would collectone ? yopu canfind them all blown up at the back of shops now totally unreaslist to rebuilt the motors.....  a bike not collectible cause its cheap.........

IF yu need YZ400f parts i have the a stack of hi flow oil filter $3 each and shrouds still in bags $20 even rear guards i think in blue.  Please take them off my hands maybe fir WR and 250 and 426 as well but sure its 98--1 era.

All NIB, had them for a mates bike services, but the shit box blow its brains out before the year was out............

I bought the last 07 YZ250  2 stroke cause the parts are the same back to 02 figure i have years of parts left out there to keep it going.  2 strokes will never die.  "as lozza said Jesus rode one".  but as i add they will always rise form the dead.

    i think the "revolution" has been going on quietly for a few years now and gaining momentum in the last year or so led by the euro's it was/is only a matter of time til' the japs re-asess the situation (lost $$$)  , personally ive ridden a few different brands in 250F and 450F and late RM & YZ 250  2 crackers and i rather the latter hands down , more exciting- more flickable-and heaps easier to live with

It is just preference though I prefer two strokes but at the moment I am working on a yz450f 2004 model that I will be selling and someone must want them for them to exist.

But I only bought that to sell along with my xt500 so I can raise some $$ to get a roadbike I have thought of buying a newer r1 or zx10 cbr etc but I think I will buy a rz or rg500 they sound so much better the new 4 strokes roadbikes may do everything better but for enjoyment you have to have a 2 stroke.
