Stock 78-79 CR250 Forks
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:52:09 pm »
What kind of mods can you do to the 37mm 78-79 CR250 Forks?

I'm gonna set my nice '78 Red Rocket up to race next year, but I just want subtle mods.  It already has a nice set of DG air caps on the stock forks and rebuilt Fox Air Shox.  I'm debating getting an aluminum Works type arm from KLP and painting it red.

If the stock forks aren't worth the effort I do have a set of '81 CR250 forks (41mm), but no one seems to run these forks.

TR, with the standard 79 forks the best place for them is the bin!

The 81 aren't much better but depends on the rules state side, if you are allowed (we are not over here) run a set of 83 480 forks, much better start point. the 37mm flex way to much so no matter what you do with them valving wise they will still flex.

Mainline the 78 to 79 have different port specs, the 79 has better low down. the 78 is a light switch for power, a change in pipe from standard can and does help.

Yeah Shane's got it right, the std cartridge forks are shite, Honda went back to damper rod forks in '81 but they're pretty ordinary. The best forks are the '82/'83 43mm ones.

Yes the bikes and all running gear are the same, only thing that may change would be the jetting and needle (not sure of the spec) but would be minimal.
