Personally i know of 4 other 83/84 KX500's that could be for sale, however the owners have an over inflated view of their value. I look at like this. A good clean (restored) 83/84 KX5 is worth four to five thousand. Looking at a 2nd hand unit, If the rear shock is gone, which most are, it will cost $500 to get the stock one back to reasonable condition and $1600 for an aftermarket replacement. Most will have a trashed expansion chamber so you are looking at another $500. At best (if you do it yourself) an engine rebuild in parts will cost you $800 to 1K and pray that the kick starter mechanism is o/k. Throw a set of tyres, chains and sprockets levers, grips etc and there is another couple of hundred $ If you want to go the nightmare plastics route you will have to find another $400 dollars. Back it all out and you will find that a $1800, needs a resto bike is not good value unless it has some of the above already done. Bikes around the $1200 to $1500 represent the best value. There are some golden nuggets around, the 83 that was sold in Mildura some time back for $1800 or therabouts had a Ohlins shock in the back so the money for the bikle was well woth it.
