what would you buy

I'm looking at buying a 250 , preferences are
77 RM
77 CR honda
77 CR Husky

what do you people think would be the pick and why, all help appreciated

Of those three '77 RM followed by Husky was the pick in the day. The Honda was basically the same in '75, '76 & '77 and was not really in the race by '77.

The RM is the most popular and very reliable but the Husky is a better handling and better suspended bike but comes with extra maintenance like all Euro bikes. Honda didn't even make a CR250 in '77.

To race i would buy the 77RM, to look at i would buy the honda, but  i would prefer a kx if they were made in that year, which they were not...

Out of that bunch I would prefer the RM250B however why would you not consider a 77 YZ250D?  Maybe I'm a bit biased  but the YZ is probably the best pre 78 250 .... in my biased opinion of course

I would say
1. KTM 250 (if you can find one)
2. RM250B
3. YZ250D

You want a good overall (power and handling) bike that is dependable and has a good parts network.  I have a 1978 Husky 250CR and it is a great bike, but if you read the articles on it you will find out what most magazines felt about the '77.

Unless you have an emotional attachment to a bike from the past (had one or always wanted one) why beat your head against the wall.  A Vintage MX bike should be fun not something that sucks up your time and money and then ends up on eBay for a lot less than you put into it. (wait a minute, don't they all?)

I've learned that lesson a few times and when I was looking for Pre-78 big-bore I decided I wanted a '77 Husky 390 (first year motor, first year frame) until I looked at one of my old Cycle World mags, that tested both the YZ400D and the '77 390CR.  The 390 was built for a single purpose; To give someone who could ride it as hard as it needed to be ridden a great chance to win!  The YZ400D on the other hand was built to be very adaptable to almost every rider.  It is easier to ride and easier to get parts for.  After finally racing it I'm glad I made the decision to go with the YZ.  The first 390CR would be a cool bike to have, but it is not for everyone. So, my '77 390CR motor sits on the shelf waiting for the day I may decide to restore one.

 No I do not think a 77 ktm 250 would be any good to you at all .

   and just because thay had all the Good stuff on them from new .

  Made as a Race bike that you can trail ride it or Vinduro it you wanted too.

  I dont think You would not fall in Love with one  like I am with my 1977 400

If you can find one or import one from the USA they were the GP privateers choice in 77

Saw this one on Marks Swapmeet the other day, assuming its a 250 (don't know a lot about early KTMs), might be a bit expensive though, but it is in California so should be able to get landed for $3500-$4000.  Is the rear end a bit high?
