Not VMX but of some interest.
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:55:19 pm »
I know that the language changes as the years pass.  Words that were once common are no longer used, words like (cober, bloke, fellow)  are considered to be old fashioned and only used by some of us older chaps (there is another one) and words like "cove" (meaning a mate or an acquaintance) that were used by my grandad now just dont exist.
But today I had lunch with my wife at a Mc Donalds and trying to understand the 14 and 15 year olds in there was almost impossible, they speak so fast they run thier words together it is almost as if there is a prize for the one who can talk the fastest.  Maybe it has something to do with the pace of modern day living or the constant texting I dont know  but at this rate in another 10 years us older blokes wont be able to understand any of them, it is almost like it is evolving into a different language altogether.  If you dont believe me try going though a mc Donalds drive through to order a meal and see if you can make out what the hell they are saying.

aaargh, what's with the "like" thing? They drive me nuts, the average sentence has been made unintelligible with all the frickin 'likes' inserted in it! Too much TV? Their mum's watched Valley Girl too many times when they were in the womb?

The fast-paced talking is just a thing that most adolescents do, particularly in groups of adolescents - most of our parents would have had the same complaint about us in our teens (and that's said recognising the wide range of ages on here).

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

That's so rad dude.   Uhh.. I mean you hit the nail on the head.

The only one that gets me is when I see white middle class American kids trying to talk Ghetto with the accompanying waving of the splayed fingers in front of them.

i am "Like" with you brother,.

The younger guys I work with are no longer game to use "like" in a sentence. They will say "the hill was like, so steep" I but in and say "hang on,was it steep or not? If it was steep then it was steep but it wasn't like steep. it was steep or it wasn't"!

Not only do they not use the "like" word most of them don't even talk to me now. Bit of a bonus really.

I hate when the girls at work are talking to each other and they say shut up to the person their looking at, but their not actually telling them to shut up, it has another meaning. it really shits me.

This is actually a pretty interesting thread.  Glad I'm not alone in my experiences.  My sister is only 7 years younger than me but I can barely understand some of her sentences.  All the words seem to merge into each other.

I was recently charged with 'buddying' a grad here at work.  The lazy shit sat around all day spewing his 'like'-filled conversations to his other grad mates on the phone.

I actually asked him to speak without the use of the word 'like' and he couldn't do it.  We now call him 'Paris' in reference to his American teenage girl method of speaking.

On the other side of the scale, I work with an older bloke that's a bit of a specialist in his chosen field and he uses the word 'bloke' all the time.  He's a deadset ledge.   ;D
