Help by USA member - ebay seller wants cheque/money order for $23!!!

I just bought a new in the pack Honda CDI for my XL250R BUT the seller did not have Paypal on the auction. Cost was $7 (cool!!) with $16 shipping to Aust. I am so used to doing Paypal with US sellers I did not read the auction fully.....me bad.   
Anyway..if I can't convince this guy to take a Paypal payment is there anyone in the US with a Paypal account that could send him a MO for the total? I am happy to cover all your costs for the Paypal transfer from me to you and for the MO etc. Seller is located in Poynette, Wisconsin.

Yeah. Thats how we did it before Paypal. Another way is international Western Union money order from the post office, cost about $8 last I used one about 6 years ago.

what about a good old money transfer through your bank to theirs? it will cost you about $30 but sometimes its the only way.

yeh I did WU once before....the fees involved for WU or bank transfer make it very unattractive. Will post cash if I need to.

I found New Zealand the worst to deal with when it comes to fees. With bank to bank tranferrs you got to watch the NZ end. They like to take another fee out when it arrives over their... Sellers arnt happy.
Thats why I dont bother with that "Trade me" any more.

Last year I bought an international money order from the post office for some KX parts in the U.S.
Once I notified the seller that I had posted it, then he emailed back and told be the parts were no longer for sale. 
So I asked him to cancel the money order but didn't hear back from him.
I approached the post office and was told that I couldn't cancel it from my end plus I had to have the original money back to get some of my money back.   
After a few choice words and threats, the seller did mail the money order back to me but it still cost me quite a bit.
btw this was actually an advertiser on this site (who I haven't seen advertise anything else since btw) so I didn't have any back up from eBay/Pay Pal etc.

Don't ever do an International money transfer on a Thu, Fri. I sent 620 EU to Spain on a Friday and by the time it got into their bank account (about Tuesday), the currency had changed and only 600EU went in. I received some emails off of the supplier (all in Spanish) and it was a couple of weeks before I clicked. I tried sending 20 EU but the minimum I could send was 100 EU!
They sent the stuff anyway and said (in very bad Ingleish) that I could make it up next time.
This wouldn't happen with Paypal or a money order....

It's a bit of a pain in the arse when you find the occasional seller who doesn't paypal but I just go to the post office and get a Western Union money order. It's simple and rarely goes tits up (Tony's problem was a wanker seller rather than the money order itself). It also doesn't hurt to nurture a friend or two in the US or UK to collect items from sellers who won't ship overseas. I've got a little network going now. Our friend in the UK drove for six hours round trip to pick up a bike for us and wouldn't accept any compensation saying that it was a "nice day out for the missus and the kids"!

The UK is a problem if you find a seller who doesn't use Pay Pal. Royal Mail and Australia Post don't have a reciprocal money order system like the Western Union setup between OZ and the US so it's a bit of a drama getting money to them. I haven't tried the Thomas Cook travel agent thing that Paul suggested though. I usually try and do an international money transfer but many Poms don't trust internet banking. I try and limit my buying to sellers offering the PayPal option.

Ok just got an email.....looks like the seller is happy to use Paypal for me...phew   

The one time I used WU to the USA it worked OK but it was a hassle and the fees were high. While the evil bay / Paypal alliance is grating I guess it is by far the most convenient...so far I have had no dramas.

I remember buying something once from the US..it was only small and about $12us all up but he wanted cash.. not his cash..our cash!..seems his kids wanted some Aussie plastic money cause it's so colourful and different..I reckon if that's the case ours should be worth more!

Hey 414, the currency shouldn't change once you've paid for the money order at this end.
Currency rates change daily - and global trade happens regardless on which day of the week.
Every Trader and Company would be chasing each others tails for under and over payments if that were the case.
You were certainly jipped on that one.

I bought the Canadian Maico using an International money transfer. 
The transfer cost me $30 and the Canadian bank took $50 (approx) at their end.

Note: be absolutely certain of the account and BSB numbers of the Bank you're transferring to - all Bank details in fact.
If a single number is incorrect and it bounces back (for any reason at all) you will be up for another $30 to try the transfer again.

414, that may be where your 20 euros disappeared; it might be their Bank charge at their end?

Hmmm. Well I'll find out soon. Just sent another lot last week. It hasn't happened on tranactions in the past though.
