As shareholders of a AXS company we belong too, voted against a pay rise for the CEO.
He was getting 250k and trying for 450K.  >:(
The secretary was going for a cool 250k !!   >:(
WE the shareholders WON   8)  8)  8)

As Ali says the people do hold the power , however in my experience 95% of the people (Me included ) are happy to sit on their arses whinge and do fork all about it .

We live in democrices we can all stand for local or national govenment and do things the way we think is right . BUT should you choose to stand then try and drum up enough support from like minded thinkers like you , it will never happen (see top paragraph as to why it wont happen ).

Bottom feeders like politicans are generally born with 2 arms 2 legs etc like most of us and a voice , they get into power because people like you and me VOTE them in  ::) ::) ::) ::) then we whinge like fork when their in  ???

I whinge as much as the next bloke about the govenment , polys the economy, immigration etc etc but i do fork all to change it  except maybe vote for a different wanker next time  knowing nothing will change  ::)

What this tells me is for all our whinging and moaning we must be happy or we would actually do somthing to change it  ;)

People in the old Eastern block cried enough in 1989 and made the change ( and it was a shit load harder for those people to get change ) than it is for us .

 
Bottom line we have it TOO EASY so its easy to moan  ;D

People in the old Eastern block cried enough in 1989 and made the change ( and it was a shit load harder for those people to get change ) than it is for us .

The EU Commisioners just gave themselves a pay rise as well .... so lets see how long the new Western Block lasts. I personally think the Rumanian's had the right idea, just empty the AK47 into the departing leadership.  :o

lets hope there is more to it than your couple of lines Ali - was the CEO performing and deserving of a payrise (although maybe not $200K) - have you just given somebody who is working on your behalf an excuse to go elsewhere?  Remember - you think you work hard and are deserving of a rise - maybe the numbers are different -  but so do some CEOs?

Ok Rosco I'll bite...

I agree that there are probably many CEOs and Boards that are doing a good solid job for their shareholders and earning a reasonable income for their efforts. And if I was one of them I would be disgusted with the antics of some of their more brazen and opportunistic contemoraries. It is no different to one bad cop dragging down the entire police force.

But, the problem is how much of the tip of the iceberg are we seeing? Are the knob jockeys that are making headlines with their blatant disregard for their workers, their shareholders and their brands in the majority or the minority. The biggest part of the problem is the closed shop that proposes, ratifies and sanctions their ridiculous salaries and bonuses - no man [or woman] running a public company is worth more than $1 million a year - there simply aren't enough hours in the day to warrant that kind of money.

They should have their wages tied to a fixed multiple of the average salary of their employees. Afterall they are simply an employee as well and earning $300.00 while you are taking your morning dump is criminal.

I honestly don't know how they sleep at night.

But I have no problem for somebody to earn as much as they can in their own business, or through their own endeavours - but public companies are completely different.

I agree Jeff - to a point - not everybody is a brain surgeon and whilst there are a lot of oxygen thieves out there a smaller minority are actually good at their job and deserve their salary.  You get what you pay for - pay peanuts and get monkeys is the old saying.  In my line of work we regularly make decisions which have an impact on the business into the millions of dollars - and we aren't that far up the food chain.  My boss 2 removed actually decides on whether projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars go ahead or not - you need to pay to get somebody at that level as there are lots of pretenders and having his experience on board is worth lets say $500K-$1M extra a year when he gives direction which could generate (from one site alone) an additional $250M per annum?

The secret to it all is getting that right person - say an Andrew Forest - I worry when a group of shareholders who usually are like Bill says - not necessarily having all the information etc - decide upon the fate of an MD or CEO - it can have an adverse effect?

and I don't reckon the pollies should be getting pay rsies when they have just announced cuts that may requrie job losses in other public services areas either.

Interesting study in the US found that it doesn't matter what you pay monkeys they still do the same standard of work. ;D

I don't like to disappoint...

But the types of people you are describing did the same work for vastly less [proportionally] in the past. Why all of a sudden have their renumeration packages gone from extremely generous - to absolutely insane.

Those that are making the kind of decisions you describe still only have 24 hours in the day, only have less than a lifetimes experience. Sure they make critical decisions, but prior to that single critical decision there are reports, projections and copious amounts of information [gathered by others] that enable them to make an informed decision.

No different to what an airline pilot does during an emergency or a surgeon in an operating theatre. They are just doing a job and just because there is significant money involved doesn't entitle them to hundreds of times the average workers wage. It is a very convenient argument, but they never seem to want to give the money back when things go wrong with the next decision.

They should be paid well but...

My view is that the CEOs and BOD members of a lot of companies feel that they are entitled to a disproportionate share of the companies earnings given that ALL company members contribute to some degree to the success of the company. Often renumerationation tends to be more relative to the BOD or CEOs sense of entitlement as opposed to their performance..... if you ask for countless millions, then people will think you are worth that in some cases.

Jeff - generalisations always cause concern - as is usually the case in this type of conversation and there are always examples to support either case - although Ali what happened in Japan impacted upon your thoughts to vote for a local CEO's pay rise - sorry don't see how the 2 relate??????

And again - let me give you an example which supports certain people getting what others are calling ridiculous money - a $1Billion project - cannot get the chemistry to work to allow the project to cross the line - already being built as lab work suggested otherwise.  Gentleman charges $2500 per day for a 12 hour day - came up with the answer allowed the project to look at a 100 year mine life - economically.  Can quote another that I am currently working with that will allow another $250M project operate environmentally friendly and economically - and he earns shite loads more than me.

Just because somebody is tagged an MD or a CEO or earns lots more than you or I doesn't automatically make them a "bad" guy.

And yes - again - there are those that rape and pillage the systems - I believe comment was made about the guy in charge of Telstra and his efforts - but not all are like that.

Oh - and Jeff - I am not seeing huge differences in these "exhorbitant" charges over the years either - the $2500 a day was back in 2000.  And how many doctors do you know that charge the same after 10 years in practice as they did when they first came out.

I hope it isn't a case of tall poppy syndrome?

And Ali - I actually have experienced a lot of those little tribal villages your refer to on the ABC - again generalisations as it isn't always a bad story  :o  ABC isn't always gospel ;D
