So, if you were going to do such a hybrid what would the best 4t of the period be? The XT500, XR500 or the DR400/500? Maybe the XL350 oversized and hotted up?

I like it. It's not as if he's chopped up a rare and exotic bike....AW Maico's are a dime a dozen and it's our6'7'' friends vision so what does it matter if it upsets the purists. If he saved one basket case Maico and an old DR engine from being recycled into a Toyota Camry he's done society proud. But....$4850 Arizona Mike pricing puts it about 2k over quota. I don't know what's so rare about the mag backing plate either ???
At least it's not a works replica. ::)

I'm with Firko, its 3/4 there....loose the red tank/fork boots, tidy/redo the exhaust and footpegs, fit an electric leg and your home......to my mind Kelvin Franks 4 stoke bikes are the best looking for that period.......speaking of Kelvin, does anybody know how he's going?
QVMX.....Australia's #1 VMX club......leading the way.

I'm surprised there are not more XL/XR500 hybrids as they have a wet sump and eliminate the problem of fitting an oil tank as you get with the TT/XT500 motors.

Therin lies the problem....because of that wet sump it makes it difficult to fit the engine between the frame rails on chassis made for a 2 stroke which usually have a shallow cradle and narrow bottom rails.
The XL/XR engine looks to be a simple fix until the sump comes into the equation. Another potential problem is exhaust clearance on the twin exhaust port engines.
