Hi all - long time lurker - saying g'day.
Its time to start digging into my broken RM collection and build a bike from the rubble. We have a great track in Kal and at last years arena-cross a few lads took to the dirt on their vintage rides. Looked great and stirred a lot of interest so my brother and I are building a bikes in the hope of getting a few similar events happening in Kal. He's started a YZ400F and mine will be the trusty RM125.
I have what I'm told is an RM125s (incomplete) and another RM125A (in pieces). I'm hoping to bleed the forum brains trust of a little knowledge so I can identify my starting point.
The 125S is missing its tank - which I've been led to believe is steel with an offset filler. Frame and engine are complete with a DG head and downpipe. This is the bike on ebay a few months back in Melbourne that was mentioned here.
The 125a was recently purchased in Perth .. also off eBay. Engine is in pieces and missing some minor stuff like carb etc. Now... I was under the impression the A's had an aluminium tank but this one has a little corrosion inside so its got me pondering if its steel? If it is and is the same as the S tank then the 75s will go ahead. If not then maybe the 76a will be built.
Can anyone give me a few hints on how to identify what model the bikes are? I believe there's also some differences in forks? Anything else I should be looking for? Is there a difference in the S and A tanks (or am I barking up the wrong tree here).
Was there much difference in the 75 / 76 engine? Is the DG head interchangeable?
Appreciate the help and will throw some pics up when I can. They're not much to look at for now, but the plan is to spend too much money, drink too much beer, and build a presentable / useable bike for track days.
Like everyone I'm also on the lookout for parts for these bikes so feel free to drop me a line if your cleaning the shed. Happy to pay good money for good parts (or bikes) and distance isn't an issue.
Cheers,
Steve.
