Before you start doing a big resto on your bike it is a good idea to check if the bike hasen't at some stage been stolen.
 I have recently spent a bit of money doing a bike up and went to rec register it, only to find 2 digits have been altered on the frame. Vic roads have refused to register the bike and refeered it on to the police stole vehicle squad. 
I now have to take it to the police to have them look at it. So even if the bike is old, i would recommend running the numbers through the system to make sure.

I heard of this with a guy who bought a bike at a shop. When the shop went to rego it they found that the engine was hot . Real stupid part was it had been registerd with that motor before .

A good tip there dirtpilot
A few years back i done a check on all my bikes spare gear boxes and frames through the revs site all came back clear.
But should be something to check first up before a big project thats for sure.

I have just come back from the stolen motor vehicle unit. They will run some more number combo's, but looks more likely a new frame number will be issued. The engine seems fine, which is good as i spent $700 on a rebuild.

Update. Got a letter from the police. Said they cannot id the frame and motor is clean. Went to dickroads to register the bike. After getting grief over the recipt, they issued a new VIN number. Had to go home and stamp it on, then back to get the plate and papers. So after 6 weeks, 4 trips to vic roads and on to the police the bike is finally rec registered and mine.

When I was a 15 I had my 1990 CR250 stolen from my house,I had saved and saved and only had it 2 weeks before some mongrel nicked it.It wasnt that old at the time either and only had it becuase my brother sold it to me cheap.It put me into depresion and really affected me.Anyway about 6-7 years later I found my bike at a bike shop,I knew it was mine straight away from some marks here and there,when we checked the numbers it was obvious to see they had been changed,we rang the police and they impounded the bike.Weeks later they rang me to say come pick it up.I was so happy.The stupid thing was that the guy in the workshop told me that when it came in the whole bike was sprayed flat black.It had a new engine number plate made up and they had used 1/8 alloy rivits to fix it on.I think they would have known it was stolen.Anyway glad to hear you got yours sorted.Ill be sure to revs check any bikes I buy in the future.
