The story back in the day was that these things were 'no good' because the bigend bearing was the same as the 250cc engine and "wouldn't last 5 minutes".
Did that turn out to be true?
Just curious.
pancho.
dont follow me i'm probably off line!

That may of been the case with the earlier models but they were upgraded thru the years and this army model had basicly the same bottom end as the B 44 -end fed bigend with bearings on both ends of crank i was talking to an old mechanic /biker the other day and he reckoned the saying with these army beezers was after they were worn-out you'd get another 5yrs riding - these motors are sought after in uk for pre 65 scrambles and trials, but as ive found out (half way threw a build )  they arent pre 65 in oz due to the points -WTF ::) it wasnt in the 07-08' rule Book !

If that's the case would somebody have had to make a submission to those writing the rules to have this model made ineligible?

Dunno, i always read it under PRE 65 rule 18.7.2 - tables of machines and components  " BSA - ALL except B44 and B50"  but someone dropped the NO SIDEPOINTS bomb and on closer inspection rule 18.6.0.1  states" engines must remain externally unchanged" and the early B40s had the distributer on top of case as opposed to sidepoints and therefore dont fit into the carry over rule ,to my way of thinking theirs no advantage whatsoever and who in their right mind would give a shite as long as the bike's are in the spirit of the era and on the startlines as they are in uk :-\ remember this line of motor go back to around 61'and jeff smiths 64'/65 bike had sidepoints ?

I've forgotten the little details but the points/distributor rulebook definition for the B40 came about as a result of the Brooke and Peter Lawson B40 being found wanting legally at the Conondale Nats and being disqualified from the results of pre 65 after a lengthy legal battle. Dave Tanner can fill you in more. My personal take is that all B40's should be allowed but what I think means sixpeneth worth of SFA, drop Dave a PM.
