While I fully understand that times are really tough right now, seven entries is still a pretty poor roll up. As much as I respect the Tassie club and their enthusiasm in putting on the event, for the first time out under the new Nationals split format situating the meeting in a more user friendly location might have been a more sensible decision. The costs of the ferry journey and the long road distance from the strong Queensland and NSW Evo and Pre85 entrant pool really work against the Tasmania location.

If I'd been making the decision on where the meeting should be held I'd have opted for a mainland east coast location where you'd be guaranteed a strong roll up. I'd have been making sure that the first stand alone Post Classic Nats had as much potential support as it could muster, if only to prove the split concept works. The 160+ entries for the Classic Nats in Queensland showed that punters will most definitely travel to an event as long as it's not too difficult or draining on the wallet. Unfortunately that damned ferry makes Tassie a poor location choice for that reason.

Another reason for the lack of entries may be the close date proximity to CD9. CD9 is now a 'must do' on the VMX calendar and, as Andrew rightly pointed out, racers have only so much finance to travel to events, CD9 might be the more popular choice. It's easily accessed central location also makes it more attractive for the cash strapped punter.

That being so, it's a sad reflection on clubs confidence in 'having a go'. I fully understand that the Nats isn't a cheap event to promote so perhaps the pre 90/Evo oriented clubs that one would think are capable of running it, HEAVEN and VIPER were frightened off by those costs. However if a small club in Tasmania can raise the funds and have confidence in running it, one would think the bigger mainland clubs could easily pull it off.
Just my 2 bobs worth ;)

Tas has managed in 2003 and 2008 and now in 12  not bloody bad for a very small club . As an ex member of Heaven my hats off to the Tas scramble club .
please remember that we have to take that ship over to all the other events  , HBBB , CD , NATS .  Iain

I think having the Nats a week after the QVMX Maxima Oils Connondale Classic makes it very difficult for alot
of people from Queensland to make the trip to Tassie as this years Connondale Classic is going to be huge
and they won't want to miss it.

So there you go. There doesn't seem to have been a lot of thought put into the Tassie date. Don't get me wrong, I really want the Tassie Nats to go off bigger than Ben Hur but CD9 and the Conondale Classic are big opposition.

I doubt the Connondale classic had a lot to do with the low entries from Vic. More like the $2000.00 odd dollars it'll cost most of us to get there and compete....... ::)

Thanks may be our club should have looked at that. My thoughts always have been that once the nats was split there should be post classic one year and pre classic they next year big turn out for both .Then each state could hold a big race aswell if they wanted .
then there be able not to clash with other big events like CD.The calender is a bit full to travel around Aust to get to most
