Monty Clutch - Cause or Effect?

Just found this dovarlackie (part # 0263.106 (1) sits between Clutch Activating Cam/lever and Pressure Distribution Plate (A.K.A. Clutch Spider)) in the Monty with a heavy clutch. Obviously damaged :'(.

Is this normal wear and tear or do I have another not-so-obvious problem I have to chase down?

Anyone have a spare or know where I can get one?

The bike is 'new to me' - I don't know its history.

It looks like 'running out of oil' type damage. The side cover was replaced sans gasket, so.......maybe.

"they wear but aint never seen one like that!" - had a Ducati Paso with similar prob. The hydraulic slave piston straight onto a push rod sans oil. Of course the hydraulic piston grabbed and turned in an aluminum cylinder flogging it out in no time flat (and then leaking ). It became routine to take the cover off occasionally and hitting it with a spray of chain lube - then no probs .

However, the Monty is designed to run in oil.

It leaves me looking for a replacement. If you have me let me know otherwise I'll drop Jared an email.

You must maintain at least 2mm of free play in the clutch cable to keep this from happening.

This one is running - still has a heavyish clutch. But then I'm probably being spoilt by jappers .

I got the clutch parts replaced and things are working. Still not certain what caused the damage. Tried it 'wrong way around' and it still worked and withdrew fully, although notchy in feel. Most probable cause is likely to be the last owner set the cable without enough free-play (as Jared pointed out). I will still look for improvements; different perch and levers and maybe a Teflon lined cable if I can find one.

Being one never to leave a good thing alone , I'm now trying to get it to run with a flat slide Mikuni.

That sounds fantastic! A flat side Mikuni! Yeah. Can't see any eligibility problems there! Must be why this build's taking so long (is it seven years now?!), keeping in the theme of the bike an' all that....

No problem Graeme. I realise that a bloke with such a presence on here (5000 odd posts) must have some real gems out in the shed. Thought it might be time to drag you away from solving the problems of the world on general discussion and get you talking about some of your bikes..... .

hi graham my monty roller is in the shed now starting to restor when the motor arrives and i get most together pop over and have a look.
