Kim Ashkenazi
« on: September 08, 2011, 08:28:09 pm »
Went to a MNSW meeting last weekend & Kim did a talk on his life. Pointless me trying to fill you guys in on what he talked about, I wont do it justice. All I can say is if you get a chance to listen to him DO IT. I am trying to organise to get him to Moree. The best recomendation I can give is that I want my 10 year old to sit in on his talk.

That sounds impressive. I take it you are saying he has turned himself around and prepared to talk about his mistakes and admit things. To be frank I wouldn't have expected of him but if its true he goes up in my estimation immeasurably :).

As I understand it, the child porn stuff was more about the hysteria than what you're probably thinking. Something to do with his GF at the time - it was legal from him to bork her, but not to have photos of her or something...
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know the bloke, but he did impress the hell out of me in the interview in ADB. While there were a lot of cringe-worthy things he's done, he was honest about it, and admitted that he'd done the wrong thing.

Thats great news , Kim was /is a very talented rider and winners dont have to be nice guys  ;) I read that ADB article to and fair play to the bloke , the general media scum are great at telling one side of a story , so it was nice to see Kim tell his side.
Ok so he came off the rails , that kiddy fiddling bullshit was as has been said, blown out of proportion  ::) Nobody hates Nonses more than me . He did his time in an English nick and if he was guilty of anything like that he wouldn't have come out looking like he went in  ;)

Its good the guys moving on and surley we the bike community can cut him a break and remember him for the racer and the champion he was weather you like his personality or not :)

I agree almost entirerly with what TM said. he's moved on and more power to him and it's great that he is taking the time time to spread the message.
I don't agree that "winners don't need to be nice guys" prob not in the short term-but perenial champs are nice guys-it's in their phsyci and our very sport proves that.
All of the past champions of our sport are nice guys, they were then and they are now (because they were then).....sure they might have had to be hard, but not deadshits. It's because they were hard that made them what the were/are, because they got to like themselves and what they did.
Winners are Grinners.

Yeah i have a lot of time for Gobert, he was probably the best rider to come out of Australia until his lifestyle got him and there was that whole purse snatching thing.  ::)

Also it is a credit to Kim that when he was caught by the boys in blue he put his hand up, admitted his crimes, pleaded guilty and took it on the chin. He didn't try to worm his way out by blaming anybody and everybody for his actions. He did his time and deserves a second chance. He freely admits he screwedup big time.

The kiddie fiddler stuff was pretty bogus. He had photos of his young [then] fiance who was over the age of consent, but having intimate photos of her on his phone was an offence under UK law. So it was lawful to sleep with her, but not to record the events…

I agree with everything said before me. As a racer who would have sold my soul to have the talent these blokes have so it shits me no end to see riders blessed with infinite talent such as Kim and Gobert piss it against the wall. Perhaps it's the pressure of public limelight and expectations they're fighting to fulfill that breaks these blokes but whatever it is it's sad. I know that Kims father Steve was almost broken by his boys downfall so this is good news.

Firko I know what you are saying but just because you 'have infinite talent on a motorcycle' doesn't make you are a better human being. History is full of elite sports people who have failed abismally in real life, they are as flawed as human beings as the rest of us [and in some ways even more so].

Gowing up in a coseted, sheltered lifestyle surrounded by fans and lackeys extolling the virtues of your talents is no basis for personal growth. When the music stops and the fans move on, unless you have provided for your future, you will have to earn a living in the real world and this is a rude shock to those that have given up everything, including their childhood, in search of success in the sporting arena.

For every one that makes it there are 1000's who have compromised their futures in search of the dream. Is it worth it? Well that is a question for the individual, but if you look at the numbers, it sure isn't a life I would wish on my children.

I guess it is a matter of perspective. I encourage my kids to give 100% in their endeavours, but it would worry me greatly if they put all their eggs in a 'sporting basket' with no safety net.

Having said that, I still believe that individuals like Kim, who acknowledge their mistakes, deserve a second [and perhaps a third] chance. I dare say he has grown up enormously in the last few years, who knows what he can make of himself from here on in. I hope it is inspirational…

…and yes, he is probably still 'damn fast'

Ah but talent is a multi-faceted beast. Surely talent would include the mental strength to dedicate yourself to your chosen avenue? The physical talent is nothing without that drive

One rider who springs to mind who wasn't particularly talented (I've seen more talented riders) but who had the drive to rise to the top was Greg Albertyn. Another is Dougie Lampkin. Both were hard bastards.

Good point Too-Fast. Most of those I mentioned earlier ( the guys we look up to/ the nice guys) would always be described as "hard bastards" because they don't like to compromise-they don't for themselves and expect you not to either.
The rest of us are just soft(ish)
