What year is this Yamaha SR,XT,TT 500 engine

Hello ...

I have a loose XT/SR/TT 500 engine (serial number 2J2-150564).
Can someone tell me what year it might be and the version of bike it come from (SR,XT,TT)

I'm trying to decide on a suitable frame to put her in.  Suggestions?

Yeah, I sort of agree, although that engine number appears a bit higher than I would have expected.

engine number:
2J2-000101 onwards = US model 1978 SR500E
2J2-020101 onwards = US model 1979 SR500F
2J2-100101 onwards = Canada and "Others" model 1978 SR500E
2J2-110101 onwards = Canada and "Others" model 1979 SR500F

("Others" = anywhere outside of USA, Canada, Oceania, Europe and Japan)

Seems a bit high...  Are you sure that engine number's correct?  Not a misplaced digit somwhere?

Later model Japanese SR500 engine, SR400/500 are still in production even now so they have probably had to add another digit. Good engine for special like HL as you can run CDI. Cheap as chips second hand in Japan.

Husky frame from about 1979 will do a pretty good job in holding the SR motor assuming you can weld.

VM36 Mikuni can be bought for about $300 new from Sudco in the USA and would probably be the best choice for carbs unless you have access to CR Keihin. I am using CR only because I have Daytona high port race head for the SR engine.

My screw up, Broadford, Bendigo sound roughly the same. Our Bendigo connection BigK could hardly be described as a 4 stroke special enthusiast.

Husky frame from about 1979 will do a pretty good job in holding the SR motor assuming you can weld.

here is a SR500 engine in a 1978 Husky frame that I built many years ago.



Minimal mods to the frame were require. Last year I removed the Yamaha engine and reverted back to the original 390 auto engine. I have another 1978 CR frame that the 500 Yamaha engine will eventually go back into.

Kenny Roberts TT500 was monoshock and in VMX Magazine a couple of issues ago and so was XT550 for that matter.

The curly issues will be the engine height under the monoshock as TT motor is much taller than YZ and even worse finding a place to fit carb and airbox. The Roberts TT500 has dodgy looking Unifilter dangling off the side and needs a Quickslobber carb .... something that can run up hill.

As you can see the Husky is less problematic. If you use the Husky frame with the single tube backbone the YZ125C tank will drop on but you will have top shock mounts that look different to the HL.

 First Hallman must have used a 75/76 Husky frame. Although I have no experience I've not read of any other frame  that works without massive changes.
