Australia Post is Useless!!!!
« on: July 27, 2011, 09:55:23 am »

3 weeks ago I sent a small package to the US via Australia Post Standard Airmail - can't remember the exact weight but I think it was around 900 grams - not very heavy at all.

I used a standard sized Australia Post Airmail Bag and they charged me around $45 + the new $9 fuel levy (for package over 500 gram) + the cost of the bag.  Wasn't too happy with the cost, but thought it would at least get there quickly..   ???

The bloody package has just taken 3 weeks to get to Pennsylvania!!  $57 for airmail and it still takes 3 weeks!!!   :o  >:(  >:(  >:(

Bloody Useless!!!   >:(

I sent a PE400 crankshaft to France, sea-mail.
Got there in ONE week.
Go figure.  ;D

I also received a small Owners Manual from Canada - that took SEVEN months.

Post is a mystery, wrapped in an enigma. Do NOT try to understand it.

Anything I have had sent from the USA or or the UK has taken 3 weeks and costs a lot.
Just plan for the wait, and it may cost more if that T%X comes in.

Yes, but was that Aust. Post or US Post that was slow on delivery?

BTW, that $9.00 isn't a fuel levy, its a security charge imposed by the US, it has nothing to do with Aust Post.

Another option these days is the Express Post International, its only a few dollars more than Air Mail and gives you tracking.

I have spent over 16 grand with Aust. Post over the last decade and they haven't lost anything yet, (come close a few times though)

I reckon they do alright. I've have two or three things lost, but they've always turned up in the end - and usually with a mistake in the address.
The only WTF!? effort was a package from Sydney to Canberra that kept being returned to the sender. We thought he was bullshing us, until he hand delivered it with all of the AusPost guff saying that the (correct) address was incorrect (!?).

International stuff is a different story, but I think that they are used as a scape-goat 99% of the times they're blamed...
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Canada & England sea mail is minimum 3 months wait
standard airmail from Canada & England for smaller/lighter stuff is reasonably priced and usually takes less than 14 days but anything big/bulky or heavy is very expensive
Post from USA via USPS priority is always less than 14 days for me. You need to realise not all sellers will rush to the PO as soon as you have clicked 'paypal send payment' so that may explain why things can take longer.
First class airmail from USA can be hit and miss. Some times its the usual 14 days or less and sometimes it can be 3 or 4 weeks.
Airmail from Germany via 'Deutsche post welt packet' can be slow sometimes but usually under 3 weeks.
I have also had things from Italy, South Africa, Greece, Cyprus, Finland, France etc and they are all usually here with in 14 days.
Couriers such as DPD, DHL, TNT etc from Europe are very expensive but the stuff can be tracked very well and will arrive in under 10 days, depending on where you are in Australia and sometimes if it gets transfered to Australian Air express on a friday it will sit at their depot for the weekend and then only head out for delivery on the Monday.
I have never had any complaints with Australia Post. They seem pretty damn good and yes the $9 charge is from USA's end. I was told by AP its because of 911 and for extra costs in sorting the stuff we send once it gets there.

I recently bought a shirt from a seller in the USA on a Thursday and it was in my hand on the following Monday....2 DAYS! On the other hand I bought a tiny DT1 oil pump blanking plate and it took 7 weeks to get to me. As luke earlier said...Don't try and understand it.

In 10 years of buying from overseas I've learned to avoid buying anything from Canada as you'll never be sure you'll get the item and'll pay through the bum for the privelege. There are some deep problems withing their mail system that only seem to be getting worse. From my experience Australia Post and USPS seem to be pretty efficient outfits. I've only ever had one item lost from Oz Post, a book being sent to a forum member which seems to have turned to vapor. I sent it by express mail but lost my little number tag and despite some upper management help from a well connected mate, it never turned up. Same with USPS, no problems worth mentioning, although I'm getting a tad worried about an aftermarket TM400 flywheel weight that's taken 8 weeks so far. The seller reckons he posted it off in early June and I believe him as I've bought a lot of stuff from him over the years with no previous hassles.

Had no problems with Aussie Post, got cheap postage for a gasket set from Canada, by far the worst WTF was Germany to Australia. A 250g package cost 40Euro from Berlin, I thought the bloke was gouging me but it had 40Euro on the stamp WTF?

Herr Stolk, that cannot be correct. I know first-hand that a Deutsche Post letterpack up to about 2kg can flit over to OZ by air for less than €15. Was yours a specialist courier, overnight super-express, registered?
If they sent your 250g item as a Large Package (duh!), then yeah, the €40 would be about right.

Aus Post isnt so bad as long as you know the system , but you must know.
Post from UPPS seems good if the sender knows how to. I've seen the price vary by $20.00 for the same item depending on the poster and thats on the price of the stamp.
