If it meets the appropriate snell/Dot/fim standards then yes it can be use for closed course competition such as MX, but not for any competition that goes on public roads eg rallys, enduros, reliability trials etc. If you have any probs with the helmet, dont expect the local importers to help you out. I spoke to a sales rep for a certain brand of helmets the otherday and they as well as other importers are not happy about people bringing in non AS std helmets. They cut the straps off any non AS 1689  they see and will not talk to you if you have a warrenty issue if it has not got AS 1698. A lot of shops are now charging people to try on boots and nylons too.

I understand the attitude, but cutting the straps off someone's skid-lid is not cool.
CAMS used to do that to helmets that were in big crashes, but then it was pointed out that they were vandalising someone else's property. Then they realised they were a bunch of petty little twats, and pulled their heads in (yeah, I made up the last bit, but the rest is true).

(Late edit to undo the auto-correct stooge factor).

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Yeah I understand the bike shops wanting to charge for people trying on gear because lots of people go in try on gear to get the correct size and buy it online it is not illegal but it is pretty rude and hurts the bike shops.

I reckon womens clothes shops should charge chicks to try on clothes,if there all like my wife, she try's heaps of stuff on,pisses the assistant around ,then says no thanks & walks out saying she couldn't find anything that looked right, those shop assistants must have lots of patience :D. and another thing, they should put big screen tv's in those shops for us long suffering blokes to watch sports while we are waiting ;)

Yes but I will buy stuff online but I would never use the bike shop as a checking service if I walk in to a bike shop I am there to buy. ;)

AS 1698 was a standard adopted in the 60'S based on fiberglass helmet impacts of the era.  The fact that RTA has not updated the standard which is a basic minimum is so out of date most current helments meet or far exceed it.

IF you used current car crash standards from the 60's,  every car in the world would surely meet it but not vise versa.

Hence MA have realised the Folly of the AS sticker and have moved on to allow then newer more robust global testing standard platforms.  At some point RTA boffins will update the traffic code but its low low low on people priorites.

As leith said you can useprity much most anything now for racing ( check moms for test sticker numbers) and on the road i would be prity sure you could wing it anyway, unless you where being a tool !

the only ones i would watch out for is the Chinese and malaysia scooter helmets there not made of the same base materials as say the Airoh plastics !!!!

Sales reps cutting straps wont happen, thats vandelism or destruction of property.  IT is not illegal to own a non AS helmet if it was they would be coming through customs.    There just taking shit so youll keep stocking there crap
