XL250/350 electronic ignition/CDI
« on: July 13, 2011, 07:55:10 pm »
Does anyone make electronic ignitions for XL250/350 or is there something that fits that has the right advance curve? I have seen a guy on ebay selling a little module that just replaces the points on the base plate and has one or two wires but that was years ago and they are not there now. Maybe something like that would work on the Honda too? I want to keep the stock lighting coils but would change the source coil if needed. I know you could get Mototeks for them but I cant find one yet so need to look at other options. I also do not want to use a battery.

You could try electrix world. They have all sorts of things and if you can't find it on their internet site, ring them and ask. they are very helpful, and their ignitions are fantastic

Ask Sudman, he mentioned having fitted electronics to his C&J motors when I was at his place a couple of weeks ago

I tried Electrex but nothing there. I have spoken to sudman. It seems that ATC or XL200 parts work but i dont know exactly whats involved yet till i get the right parts as there is  quite a number of pulse generators & CDI's for a whole stack of models arund the same era that have similar cam triggered sensors so i just need to find out the exact model as some numbers supercede. Some said ATC, some XR/XL etc. Just installed 2 Honda zedder x-ref programes that may help.I think this is looking like the most realistic option to a Mototek if its proven to work well on modified XL engines. Do most people run points these days instead?

Yes i know that guy and have an address of his but im not sure how current it is. I have tried contacting him 2 different ways. Apparantly he is very hard to get ahold of which i have found out, but yeah i hear he is not doing too well at the moment which is probably the reason. It would be far easier to buy the stuff from him but if i cant, then i got to look at other options. I cant wait around for ever. I will send you a pm Jim. Thanks

Not sure. I looked at a 2010 CT110 on Friday. Took the points cover off (which is the same or very close to the same as the XL) and it was completly empty, nothing on the end of the cam. No points, no pulse generator ??? so im guessing it must be like a modern dirt bike stator and the CT110 has all the electrics down on the end of the crank. The cover over the end of the cam must be from an old model when they had breaker points up top. Might be an option but i dont want too much stuffing around and experimentation to do. Motor work is gonna be big dollars so i dont have surplus to throw around buying stators that wont fit or are not suited to an XL ;) Plenty of other people would have tried it already i reckon.

I run postie ignition in my xl420 it must be pre 90 postie bike though the later stuff doesn't match and you will need to have your stator rewound to match it works great. A good old mate made it for me and the old bike went from a small shit spark that wouldn't start to a big blue spark that makes the bike start first kick every time. A great hot up mod.

Cheers

I forgot to mention parts cost $10.00 from the wreckers (shit loads of old posties) and $100.00 to rewind stator to suit, Cheap mod as well.

I dont know the exact years but approx mid 80's to mid 90's ct110's had electronic ignition with the trigger running off the cam with mechanical advance(i have an ex postie bike 1991 model which runs this setup)  , before that they were the same setup but points & after that they changed to the current type triggered off the crank, there are two models, the aggy version with hi/low & the postie version with ordinary 4 speed, from memory they ran different stators but the same pulse coil :)

Thanks, i will have to look into the CT110 stuff. Fatboyracing, do you just rewind the XL primary coil to the same spec as the CT coil? What is the advance curve like when fitted to a XL motor and does the CT CDI allow the XL to rev high? I know some CDI's have low limits

My xl doesnt have any trouble reeving high I really think this is a great and reasonably easy mod I am not exactly sure on the coil but i sent them both away. This is more then likely what happened perhaps you need to talk to an auto electric person or some one who rewinds stators.

If you need any more info please ask

Thanks for your help. I did a bit of looking around on posty sites and a lot of them put aftermarket CDI's on inplace of the stock CDI anyway and i have seen them on ebay. I think i will probably try the XR method first once i know whats needed as there seems to be more of that stuff around than posty parts.
