85 kx500 won't fire up after top end rebuild.
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:28:50 pm »
This is really confusing me.Fresh piston (installed correct way round!)etc, checked for spark before i tried to fire her up for the first time, nice fat, regular spark, great i thought. Now when i first tried to start it it fired for a split second and died, done this a couple of times, felt like a fuel fault.Found out new fuel pipe i got from the tank to the carb was crap,it was collapsing behind the air filter casing as the casing was pressing against it slightly, ditched that and got new fuel line. Now there is no fuel getting to the spark plug which is weird,as carb/jets are spotlessly clean and when i pulled the reed block it was wet with fuel??How in the hell can the reeds have fuel but the plug not??Reeds aren't stuck or broken, and they're the correct way up!Anyone any ideas, this is driving me nuts!!

you havent got a rag jammed in somewhere air intake wise or in the cylinder?

I'd pour a bit of fuel down the plug hole to see if it fires on that maybe you problem is the motor can't breath more than fuel??

Try pulling the exhaust off and see if it will start breifly. If the gas can't get out the air can't get in to draw the fuel. just a long shot but i have had it happen to me before with a wasp nest in the stinger.

sounds flooded has to much fuel sitting in the crank cases and is washing the plug when you are kicking it over thats why the plug looks dry and clean try taking reeds out and blow out cases with compressed air new plug and then should start

I knew someone would say that! ;DI was going to mention in original post this had been checked!Exhaust pipes are brand new so no blockages, base gasket is new as are all gaskets.I would have thought if it was flooded the spark plug would be soaked?.I'll try kicking it over with the plug out to see if it clears itself if it's flooded and try again!.

Im starting to get puffs of smoke now out the exhaust when im kicking it,so it's thinking about it!Got a couple of bad kick backs though and i already have an injured leg!Might try the tow method but seen the guy up the road try that and the car just pulled him onto his side when he bumped it! ::)

had one of my imports doing the same thing -fresh motor,so heaps of compreession, great spark.did all the usual cleaned carb, still wouldnt start ended up winding  the idle screw out and it fired up,might work for you.my 83 xc 500 is apig to start if idle is wound in a bit too far as well

Is the stator/ignition timing set correctly?

Pulled the stator casing then the flywheel and couldn't believe it,the woodruff key(flywheel key) had sheared in two, half of it in the flywheel and half of it in the crank shaft!!Strange to as i've always got a good strong spark so wasn't even thinking about electrics. This doesn't solve the fact though fuel isn't getting drawn up to the spark plug though from the reeds! >:(

Lap that flywheel to get it matching the shaft right , before you go putting a new key in :)

I've had that happen before.. it'll start when you replace the woodruff key.
