Hmmm dodgy kiwi  ::) a bloke with no formal mechanical , panel beating or engineering  training and working in his spare bedroom and living room with only basic hand tools and a limited budget , builds a bike of his own inspiration that on its first competitive outing wins all its races and continues to win races at EVERY meeting it enters there after both in NZ and Aus then i suppose there must be somthing dodgy  ::)
Not to mention that the entire build was posted on this forum and the goal of getting the bike to CD6 again on a budget and tight time frame was achived  :)inspite of some sabotage by a jealous competitor only a week before the bike was due to be shipped to Aus

::)

http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=927.0

The same bloke on his 2nd trip to Aus where he gets to ride the bike competitivley on foriegn soil (no racing at CD 6 ) abandons the bike and any further racing to take care of his mate who stupidly hurt himself and even drove the bloody ambulance  ;D

Dodgy forking dodgy   ::)  i think that makes him a forking legend  8) what that bloke achieved taking into account all the above is nothing short of brilliant  :) what could he do given the budgets of others  :o

He has recently had to sell the bike to finance the purchase of a couple of his dream bikes ( personally i wouldn't give you tuppence for them ) but that bike he created in his front room  is and always will be in my opinion pricless and a testement to a top bloke and a VMX legend  :)

Its easy for some to write cheques and farm out work to professionals in all fields without regard for the budget , while  others have to work within budget and time constraints

I suppose its all relative does it make good sense  to spend $600.00 to panel and paint a tank on a bike with a value of $3500.00 approx 20% of the value of the bike ???

http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=17350.0

You can buy a new Clarke tank for an RM 400T for approx $200.00 delivered , so say a race ready RM 400T with new Clarke tank is worth approx $4000.00 then the tank is approx 5% of the value of the bike

What are you waffling on about Bill  ::), farming work out to professionals has been going on since your pict ancestors lived in crofts and painted themselves blue with woad.

No doubt  so why dont we make the sport an elitist hobby and turn away or riddicule anyone who dares turn up with a modified trail bike or somthing they built themselves .

I farm some of my work out but i dont rub peoples noses in it when they make an honest and good attempt at doing somthing themseves . None of my bikes would win beauty contest but they seem to do alright on the track.

If its all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$ then fork it i cant play anymore cos i dont have a lot of spare ,  like Doc i will just go and ride my old shitters with my mates .

I know for you Marc its all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and i know you worked yourself into a position from the ground up where you are able to spend what you want (and respect for that )but for us mortals we have to work with what we have .

Sorry Bill didn't mean to offend you, I was talking about YZ250A tank repairs and prostitution. Clearly from my side I will make my position clear, for me I know that having money can be a very temporary state, so if anyone thinks I have said anything derogatory about DIY or working to a budget let me know.... I am like you I do what I can myself and specialist stuff, like painting, plating etc I farm out, shop hard.

No worries mate probably time of the month for me  ::) I know you do a lot of your own work and are always searching for bargains . I am only to happy to hang shit on peoples builds (Harleys and Swinging arms come to mind ) and will happily recieve shit personaly  ;D but im a bit over the whole Nogouchi tank saga . My original post was about that really , a mate really poured his heart and soul into that build and to have people slagging it and reefering to it as a dodgy kiwi build forked me off.
Its no wonder DJ has found fishing , the guy is (was)110% into the VMX scene and poured probably 30% of his income into his hobby but if didn't stretch to a $nz 800.00 tank job when he built it then thats how it is. Does that mean he should fork off and come back when he can  >:(

Its great that blokes like Joan go to the trouble of getting tank tap spigots and yamaha gear change mechanisms re manufactured and available to all but not everyone can afford to go that route at once . Somtimes blokes have to prioritise  and add as they go along and improvise in the interim , its a race bike for christ sake and a Winning race bike in this case, on a budget i would have thought reliability before chrome.
Personally i would rather line up with a full grid of blokes on bikes from budget builds to expensive restos than line up with half a dozen blokes on abosolutley perfect machines .

Hey Bill,
Who has been slagging off on DJ?  :(

His thread on the Noguchi build was one of the highlights of OzVMX, and you are right, he is a champion bloke and we all miss his involvement in this site and VMX in general, but Marc was only asking about how to fix the petcock mount on his tank… no mention of DJ at all.

But you are 100% correct that VMX should embrace the budget race resto as much as the full-on perfect factory replicas. VMX is a personal thing - you can feel Marc's passion in his posts in the same way you can sense the enthusiasm in yours.

Your shed full of 100+ [only guessing - I didn't count 'em] bikes makes my personal fleet of 4 look positively lame and it is obvious that you spend way more time and effort than I do on this whole VMX thing but that doesn't mean that I enjoy it any less than you do. We are all different, but share the love of crappy old motorbikes [my wifes words not mine  ;)] and the world is better for it…

Now where can I send my alloy tank to get fixed…?
VMX42

And DJ, where the hell are the final pics of your new Man Cave. You teased us with the build, now show us the final result!!!! Come on, you know you want too, or did Karen turn it into a sewing room while you were away?  ;D
When a woman says "What?", it's not because she didn't hear you, she's giving you the chance to chance to change what you said.

I didn't comment Bill - written word can be misconstrued so easily - but gotta agree - didn't think anyone was taking the piss.  I always try to take my bikes through to garage queen - because I couldn't as a kid.  However I am the most useless mechanic in the world - do what I can and unfortunately have to farm the rest out - because of the cost it takes a while.  However - I also think the best threads on here have been the ones where somebody does a rebuild and even better if they get to a point where I can offfer a little help.  I love the OEM finished resto - but can appreicate the work going into making a winner - one mate over here in WA - his bikes are seriously fast - but do they look good - NUP!!!

Now mate - are you coming to the Nats in SA or not???  I have been trying to find out?
