My 89 CR250
« on: August 07, 2007, 09:32:31 pm »
Well I never got to race a 2-stroke, and I thought what better way to do that than do some Viper rounds, I had a really nice 85 CR250 over 10 years ago when I was alot younger and stupider, didnt know what I had and sold it to buy a newer bike (found a picture of it the other day, hate myself even more) and kind of regretted it. So I wanted something along those lines, either 86 or 89, perfered a 89 because of the front and rear disk and upside down forks. And this thing popped up in the trading post only drama was it was in a little town called Delegate about 140km from Cann River. I picked it up for $1000 (he had no calls on it, the town was smack bang in the middle of sydney and melbourne and i was the only one dumb enough to go that far for a bike), anyway 12 hours,1100km, a chipped windscreen and we got it home (i dragged dad along to take turns driving, billy hunt not silly cu...  ;D  ) .
When I looked at it the next day I thought oh crap what have i bought, I wanted to get it scrutineering passable so i had my original shock of my CRF 450 lying around so I ripped the shock out the bushes were knackered, so i pulled the linkages apart getting ready to cry thinking here we go it has begun..... they were tears of joy, they were all practically brand new, so i greased em all up, new shocker bushes with a good spring hello ride hight. So I just went along and did some basic maintenance stuff flushed fluids, changed oils, lubed cables, tightend bolts etc , some new kick starter gears (broke the clutch hub, dont use a screw driver to try and hold it... they break) , repacked the muffler and re riveted it as it was about to fall out, nothing expensive just effort, the further i went the more cool stuff i found on it such as Pro Circuit pipe and muffler (old school) and the piece de la resistonce and White Brothers easy pull clutch!!! I love it and no you cant have it.
The rear guard was all bent so i bought a polisport one, the colors a bit off it's more of a 86 orangey red but it was my only option and it made it look so much better. I've ridden it a few times and it's an angry thing (I loooove my 450) so at the moment i'm just trying to tune it a bit and get it running as best I can, she's a bit tempramentle. I cant wait to race it. Anyone know where i can get or if i can get a aftermarket kickstarter this things floppy as and it flings out while riding.

it looks like quite a decent bike anthony well done.  i've read the original tests of cr's round then and they said what you said, the '89, '90 and '91 models put the power up high which gives a massive mid/top whammy but not a lot down lower.  as a result of this and given my limited racing prowess, i'm keen to find an '88 cr250 for club racing, which apparently spread the power out from idle up, which sounds appealing to me in terms of ridability round tracks these days which are full of big jumps and whoops straight out of corners so need power straight up.  be interested to know how you go racing this critter - you might have to choose your track carefully cause you might be a bit spoilt by the good spread on your 450 modern....good down low, mid and top....
