if this resonates then you should track down a copy of "Shop Class as Soulcraft". Along the same lines, and a good read.

I thought he was been very self indulgent to start with but he made the point very eloquently and concisely in the end. Both societies, or Western Industrial Society in general, have marginalized physical work and hand skills, and depreciated the human brain and the importance mental characteristics like tenacity associated with physical work.

Was it a highly paid. high profile, high status Congress Talkfest or did anything change ::) :P.

Absolutely. A great book and should be available from every careers advisor at school.

Well I'm overjoyed by the fact that my 3 year old is showing a keen interest in tools and how to use them.  Although my partner insists that I supervise him more with the hacksaw and power drill.
