Whats the go with motorised push bikes
« on: May 16, 2011, 01:05:41 pm »
There seems to be a growing number of those push bikes with the little 2 stroke motors fitted buzzing around as I come and go to work between southern and western suburbs of Sydney. Saw at least 4 today.
I understand they are illegal, (200w max electric only) but by the numbers that seem to be used on a daily basis as commuters (as often see the same bikes and not so young riders), can only assume that coppers turn a blind eye to them.
The mower shop around the corner from work has a couple of new ones out the front ready to ride away. Be a great way to get around I'd reckon.

Went through this after the wife bought her mother an electric motorscooter that happened to have some pedals poorly attached.
Can't recall the electric vs petrol bit, but they have to be 'primarily human powered' to have a chance of being legal.

Way more useful, accurate info on RTA website...

PS: Anyone want a cheap electric scooter? Only crashed about half a dozen times in the last three kilometres it's travelled... *facepalm*
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Kerry, I am at  odds end on where to start  on this total basket case, as there are parts missing all over the place and nothing really is a bolt up fit  ie  new brackets need to be made to fit seat along with front and rear guard etc     and without a rear wheel pscers have to be made to make use sprockets align     .......I have apretty well equiped shed  ;)   you are welcome to us it to piece it together
Now here comes the jucy part ....I drove all the way out to shorelines to pick up your wheels - and Brett tells me they are NFG and he won't lace them up WTF going on and I ended up driving back home without them as he had left them at home.
I spoke to Dave Tanner today and both him and I recon you need to come up a few days early to sort this out if it is going to be ridden.

If you put a DS80 pipe on one you allegedly get 80kmph from one.  ;) The spokes (sprocket attechment) show signs of 'wear' though.

I had to do work on an 80cc one once. Bloody dangerous, too much power for the braking capability and the sprocket is bolted to the spokes which does not last long. I was lead to believe 35cc was ok ??? The thing is, people are loosing there bike/car license but then it is supposedly ok to jump on one of thes motorized powered pushies to ride to work with nothing more than a bicycle helmet. These things go as hard as mini bikes but your not allowed to ride them on the road and even if you had a legally regoed honda 50 monkey bike, you have to ride with a proper motorcycle helmet on those and have to be fully licenced. I dont get it.

Ban these crazy things! Nothing new must be done. Nobody should have the freedom to ride a powered bicycle!
EVIL shall descend upon us all.

I,ve got one I made and rode it the other day. Mine does 30k and that,s a bit fast for the brakes.
Good fun tho. The motor on mine drives on the tyre like the old ones.
You can just flip the motor out of the road and pedal on.
The rules say that it has to be power assist and those ones are pedal assist.
They will force a change in the laws and everyone will be worse off   as usual.

I have worked on a bunch of those chinese ones and some of them make some serious hp for a pushy.
Personally I like the SACHS ones as they are very well built.

They are a growing menace and concern - who's riding them, how they ride them, where they ride them and how fast they ride them are all concerns.

I saw one the other day and I would estimate it was doing 60kph - on the footpath :o.

I see a lot of 14 -17 yo's on them. They're the one coming off footpaths, oncoming on the wrong side of the road and in groups. Then there's the 'lost licence' commuter on the main arterials.

The noise is the other issue.

But the 'authorities' don't seem to be doing a lot at the mo. A crack down will come soon. Remember the Pocket Racer/mini chopper on the road phenomenon we had about 12 months ago.

I remember a relo of a good friend built a home made unit driving off the front tyre. The engine mount on to the front forks vibrated loose, locked the front wheel and sent him head first into the tar road . A succesful young business man killed instantly.Take care.
