Looks like it might go for big bucks... interestingly they stopped making them in '81 and were replaced by the 550 but he calls it an '88 model?

Certain markets got the XT400/500 up to 1988.

I am in two minds 1: it can be worth more the way it is or 2: assemble it and do with it what is was designed for to take for a ride.

Of course thats a TT500D not an XT and I didn't know there was a "lighting kit from Yamaha" - so he says.

I was an apprentice at Rod Linden Yamaha (Frankston, Vic) when they were new and I bought a near new TT500E (yellow) and if I knew Yamaha had a lighting kit I wouldn't have gone to the trouble I did to make my own up - not saying there wasn't a kit, I just didn't know about it which seems strange.

If I recall correctly, when they released the C model TT500, you could get them with a lighting kit fitted and a small speedo on the fork leg, sort of like the TYs. I believe in some states they could be registered in that form...  It wasn't hard to do that in any case - I had a PP headlight/plate plus a TY175 taillight on my TT500F, along with a simple brake switch, on/off switch and a little mirror and got it rego'd like that.

It may even be still registered as my mate still has the bike...

The TT lighting kit was the lights, speedo etc that they used on the IT400C, all packaged together and sold as a kit.

A NOS one sold on eBay recently for about US$570.  (only NOS kit I've ever seen)

The TY/IT lighting kit was in the TT parts book, perhaps only the USA version. There were heaps of TT500's sold in SA with the lighting kit from Pitmans Yamaha so they certainly knew about it. Perhaps not all dealers/importers Australia wide were aware of the kit. There was certainly grey areas and some/most TT's actually got registered back in the early 80's when technically they were not ment to be, as compliance plates were out then and teh XT was the one you were ment to buy if you wanted rego. I guess people turned a blind eye back then. Other bikes like the early non ADR KLX250 also snuck through and a few people got those regoed in SA too back then.

In Qld rego simply required that the local cop have a look at the bike and sign it off as roadworthy. They probably didn't even know about the ADR requirements - a headlight, taillight and working brakelight was about all they looked for. This slowly changed although to be honest I don't know how it works in small towns even today. In my hometown, the change to a Main Roads inspection rather than the copshop happened around about 1977/78, so regoing a TT500, TY175 or IT400 was pretty easy in 1976...

Yeah, I had a YZ125J in 1982 and a YZ125K in 1983 that were both QLD registered.  Used to turn up at the local car dealership with a slab of beer and walk out with the pre-signed (blank) inspection form...

Both were registered (with correct engine numbers) as "100cc Ag bikes" for "Farm Use Only"...   about $10 a year rego...   ;D

It wasn't until about '84/'85 in QLD that all the engine number prefixes started to be computer cross checked for valid compliance plates.

I've spoken to QLD Transport about registering my IT400C's - compliance plates are required for any bike manufactured after 1st January 1976.

They tell me that if I can prove that my 1976 model bike was actually manufactured in 1975, then it doesn't need a compiance plate.
