G'Day Fella's from Kiwi-land
« on: May 05, 2011, 05:01:03 pm »
Hi fella's, Been into the VMX for around 5 or 6 years now after a lifetime of road bike riding and racing. Started out as a kid riding in the quarries, paddocks etc. and after nearly 40 years find myself enjoying the same all over again - maybe now with a few more dollars, kilo's and considerably less teeth and hair though it had to be said  ;D
My reintroduction was a gas guzzlin, relatively fast TM/TS 400 hybrid that was very nicely made by a guy here, the limited brakes and suspension though were just a bit too much to take after a life on tar seal. Next I got a low hour original 1985 KX250 which was hilarious and went like a bat out of hell!  :o :o
More suited a to a rider who has the ability to keep it on the pipe I figured some cc's might fix my 'challenges' so I did my homework and purchased a 1983 CR480 - which once I optimise the jetting and suspension and learn how to start it (getting there) will turn out to be my favourite of the lot. Just did my 1st proper race meeting with it and I really like it already. I'm waaay too heavy for the current set-up though and will fix that in due course ($'s...)

So what do I want here? I'd like to be a member of a community that enjoys a lot of the same thing as I do and one that can help me understand more of the Aussie VMX racing scene. I figure I might like to live in OZ and would like to figure out where the hotbeds of activity are located. I do also have a 2007 Husaberg FE450 which I trail ride and Cross Country etc.

So any guidance on VMX activity area's and good trail bike adventures, ride days etc would be of great interest.

Thanks in advance guys for any words of advice/guidance etc. and thank you for having me  :D

Hi Sudman, Thanks for the message and although the 480 isn't a showpiece she's in pretty good order thanks :-)

You mentioned the pics you'd been having a look at, we're they the ones on the Top of the South VMX page? There are a whole bunch of others that were taken on the day and done very well on the Nelson MC Club home page. There is a link at the bottom for Janines photos - perhaps you have already seen these ones?

Cheers :-)

RCV, Im an ex CHCH lad, Brisbane is the place we have 2x vintage clubs running here,so plenty of racing.(although the brisbane club only caters upto evo,the QVMX club goes to pre 90)

Trail riding,5x spots within 2hr drive of town. I have a TXC250 Husky and ride most weekends.

Plus the weathers better here even when it rains, and the ground dosent shake like back home!!

Hi RCV, I'm pretty sure Tony is referring to the photos from the links on the livewire site. Am I correct in saying that the races weren't split into eras?

Welcome RC , there are at least 12 organized trail rides in SE Queensland and a lot of them are pretty good :)
I went to an unadvertised one last Monday and over 500 turned up.
Good fun.
The advertised ones draw up to 1600 riders.
Not so much fun.

Thanks Graham, That sounds like you have quite a bit going on up there - what sort of numbers do you guys have at a typical VMX meeting I wonder? I did wonder about the heat and humidity there as well - is that something you get used to I guess?  ???

And yes it still hasn't stopped shaking yet....

Cheers  :)

Hi Sudman, I just checked those links and they do have all the photo's I was thinking of. I just had a look back through them and some of the guys were getting some pretty impressive airtime there! TT500 and the 82 YZ250 for example - a great day though no question  :)

Cheers  :)

Hi, Please excuse my ignorance and amazement but you mention 500 riders on a ride that wasn't advertised! How does that work? Is that really through word of mouth etc? Phenomenal! Yes the difference in numbers compared to our South Island events must be quite a challenge for the organisers with the track deterioration during the day and mud holes etc. Agaian, certainly sounds like there is plenty going on - nice to have choices  :)

Cheers  :)

Hi Tony, I've got a copy of the race order from the meeting and there definitely segregation to a certain degree. To be honest I'm unsure as to how that was received as it doesn't really affect me these days as I'm in Open 2-Stroke and Pre-86 with the 480 and would have never had any alternative with this bike. The guys mentioned some time ago that to help keep up some of the grids they would be trying going this way as a bit  of an experiment really and that nothing was set in stone. It certainly looks good but maybe some of the lads feel a bit overwhelmed by some of the newer bikes - at the same time some of the newer bike riders will be realising some of the older bikes do not hang around at all! Some mighty quick fellas  :o :o

For the record:

Pre75 - 78 (run together but seperately scored)
Evo
Pre-86
Junior
Vets
Small-Bore
Mid-Bore
Open 2-Stroke
Open 4-Stroke

And an all in for the survivors at the end of the day :)

Cheers

Wow! There is certainly no question as to whether it's getting used properly now then! Todd did send me a pic not long after he got it and he was flying then to - excellent and most impressive!  :o :o

We did just notice the Snr Games link last week and will definitely be there - sounds like a very interesting event so we'll look forward to seeing you guys there - and the State of Origin weekend as well. Is the KX coming along?

Thanks for the pic  :)
