FULLSTON's FOAMER: Nitro 390 out of the gate ...
« on: May 03, 2011, 01:44:15 pm »
"Dave Fullston was the our #1 State Rider for 1978 in South Australia.
Dave's bike was a 390 Husky on methanol, with a soaked nitro sponge in
the carby for those jet starts.   (Awesome)
John Hawkins was his mechanic (ex Ivan Miller's New Zealand)"

"Hi Roger ... the foam was in between the spring slide of the carby.
Once fully open this allowed the nitro to leak through the slide and into
the carby (main fuel mixture) vroom!"

- This is from Grant Ashby, a friend of Dave's ... after HBBB

Fullston is #1V below (August 1978 T&T cover)
Second version photo below has names quiz ...

While I'm at it ...

Though everone new about the spounge trick ? well known around bike circles here,  infact brenton pitman was only going on about it the other day to me, apparently dry cleaning fluid is the same.  I kept telling him were too old for all that mumbo anyway, a soft start is much more respectable ride

Not me.   I barely used to know where the sparkplug was in those days.   And, when you don't
know about it (what they did),it sounds a very exciting and nifty trick!

well if you wondered how you got beat back in the day digger, you just found out.  ;)

From what i belive all the Sa guys were onto it, i believe it was an old speedway trick and it crept in not sure if it would work with unleaded but the methonal guys used it big time back then. you just had to remember not to blip it on the line enough to squesze out the sponge other wise it was all gone.
i got a feeling the speedway cars did it too, but mixed it as a blend in the tank.   ???

thing i like about that period/ photo is they finally got here head around fitting body armour under the jersey.  Looks heaps better.

Over the top looks so Gay, they ealry ice hocky style in the 70's and even now with the chest cage stuff i reckon looks stupid.

just saying thats all.....

we used to have a golden breed factory down in SA, at christies beach from memory thats where they were made, as a kid you would balls you mum into driving down there so you could buy some factory seconds to wear around the place  remember it closing when i was a kid and we couldnt afford the from the real stores they were too expensive.  then they just disappeared.

i notice now that golden breed is back on the shelves but now in kmart,  great brand that disappeard for a while... hope they keep it going again, but i suspect they just bought the name right sand all the shit coems from china.
