If he wants to ride at a title meeting he should look for a 2 Valver, but the rules for the slider class will no doubt change again in near future.
The 2 Valve engines are obviusly getting harder to find and are also fetching more dollars.
Barring that an upright 4 Valve engined bike, Weslake, Jawa or a Godden will be a good start, prefferably in a Hagon, Elstar or Godden frame, or even a Longtrack Jawa, good luck on that one.
Did your mate enjoy the Speedway/Dirttrack at HBB?

Back end.  shock v no shocks

Speedway goes round and round vs Dirttrack/grasstrack goes left and right

2 valve is pre 75 vs 4 vavle upright is evo ( in speedway) or pre78 in dirt/grass.

2 vavle $5K+, 4 valve $3K+  , modern laydowns $4K plus

Parts as in engine wise hardness to find goes left to right

All upright frames etc seem easy to get, money is in the motors as is the upkeep.

IF he want just to play on a classic speedway he would be better to buy a 4 vavle, easier to learn ride, easy to get ride at modern meets and cheap to buy and run.

Point him on to i think it was IAn upright which was for sale here ( see for sales section or sliders post, that things runs and also is cheap.

NEver buy a speedway bike you cant hear start up and run.

Freaky pretty much put it all in a nutshell.
Just tell him not to rush into anything.
Sounds like HBB has been a great boost for the Speedway & Dirttrack scenes.
Glad to hear it, sorry I missed it, next year.

dirt track bikes
all dirt track bikes have rear shocks late models have single shock.early ones have a 3 or 4 speed gearbox mostly amc(norton).brakes are another thing d/t bikes have some on both wheels some only 1.later and longtrack bikes have a 2 speed gearbox most only shift up not down, there was a ltr hagon long track bike forsale in the usa east coast, very hard to find it could have been bought for 2000.00 usd plus freight. prices vary on these bikes here in aus ranging from 2500.00(2t slider) 3500 ruff 2v jawa to 7500 for 2v jap.you wount get much change out of 2000.00 to reco the top end of a 4v weslake.
a 4 v weslake would be the best motor to buy due to the best range of power they put out.parts are very easy to get but like maicos they are not cheap.so if you are a penny pincher you never get one to run well.
england ebay is a good place to start always grasstrack and speedway bikes for sale.i know of a pre75 2v jawa for sale but its 5500.00 aus and in good condition
