number plate "o rings"
« on: February 09, 2008, 03:00:35 pm »
Gents - feel silly for asking this but does anyone know where you can get the giant "o rings" for holding number plates on with.  I have tried all the car shops around here and Clark rubber but haven't had any luck - maybe somebody out there makes them or sells them?

If its a o- ring , give me the size (NP70) , so I can look it up .But if its more like a strap ( softer than orings ) , then try your local exhaust place , thats how they rubber mount the exhausts.

CBC has kits that u make up orings yourself, cut off length of rubber to your diameter needed with cutter supplied, prime ends with priming fluid supplied, glue tips with glue supplied and one new oring custom made, never comes apart if u follow the instruction ;) best part is once you buy the kit, youll never have to buy an oring again

I've found that when using normal o-rings, they deteriorate in daylight and break.
I used them on my MD roadbook holder instead of buying the proper drive belts, but they didn't last more than a couple of months.
They are cheap and easily available though. You just have to keep replacing them.

there are several materials for o-rings. eg nitrile, viton, buna. i think there should be a material that is longer lasting than some plain rubber material. i also think they would last longer if you spray them with armour all or bike shine or any spray like that.

Don't get me started on Amourall!
One of my Benzes had a lovely crack free dash. I hit it for the first time with amourall, and within a week a crack appeared. I said something to the boys in the Benz club and their said they thought "everyone knew not to use that shit."  ::)
Sorry, got off topic...........

Worst case scenario, you could cut one from a car innertube. Not pretty but you will have a never ending supply.

I have got one of Scott's front number boards and I highly recommend them (and I hate after market plastics for YZ's), but Scotts plastics are the real deal. I am getting two more front number boards. The kit comes with the o-ring and clips.
Great work Scott.

Shit!   I was just reading the OzVVC (Vintage Vacuum Cleaners) forum and saw the same question. Someone was asking where they can get a drive belt for their '73 Hoover resto and it was suggested to try old motorcycle dealers.
