ATK 560 Rotax 1985
« on: April 06, 2011, 10:43:17 am »
With all of the controversy over HL Yamahas and other Evo/Pre 85/Pre 78 four strokes, here's a nice example of my personal pick for the proposed pre 90 4t class. These ATKs are seriously good tackle, have quality WP USD forks and shock, Brembo brakes and the early frames (like this one)were made reputedly by C&J. This is a great survivor (many are bought by flat trackers for the engines and then parted out). The price is pretty good too. Roger the seller is an upfront guy too...I've purchased from him in the past with no problems at all.

Pre 90 four stroke eh Firko, geez that open a can of worms, XR600 was the business in its day and still can get the job done.

Against the other Ag bikes sure.....

Seriously. You can't surely be hinting that an XR 600 would be a threat on a motocross track against a Pre '90 MX'er of any capacity are you? (even an 80cc?) :o

I can only assume from your comments you lack the ability to read at an adult level, the discussion is about pre 90 4T = 4 stroke MXers, you start to run out of pre 90 4 stroke serious MXers real fast .... you have Husky and that was about it..... the rest were enduro bikes with the lights left off.

Thumper Nats was really popular and Glen Bell if you had seen him on an XR600 was awesome. So you can build a pre 90 XR to the same spec as Glens bike which in my book would make it more than a little competitive.

To build a copy of Bells bike would cost more than a real Husky or KTM or Armstrong or ATK

You could probably do something close to Bells bike and not break the bank these days as White Power forks and decent shocks etc are easy to score from that era.... plus pre 90 lets you dip into the CR parts for forks and shock. I rode one of these at Lefroy and it was awesome.

Great bike the mighty XR6 (XR600) and XR 5 (XR500) they won a heap of mx races over in NZ back in the day against 2 strokes. After all 80% of the MX equation is the rider.

I watched Glenn Bell flog a pack of 2 strokes on a XR400 with a flat front tire.

Re. the ATK my '95 & 96 are barley different to that model.  Rear disc is the only difference and some frame geometry and plastics.  Pity it can't be classed as a carry on model.

Witnessing the 'the Burner' blitzing a class field aboard a trick XR400 at a Picton Thumpernats round back in the pre CR450F days was one of the more memorable rides I've ever seen. He was pulling away from from YZ400F, Husaberg and KTM mounted opposition on the long downhill straight, showing everyone that you could find some serious HP in the little XR engine if you knew what you were doing. That bike and Glenn Bell's XR600, which was also a very fast bit of gear could easily be replicated with todays eBay parts sourcing and ever growing XR speed equipment industry thanks to our American flat track brothers.

I'd still rather a Rotax powered Kato or even better an ATK because of my love of the unusual, plus of course the fact that the Rotax engine is just so bloody good.

in the early thumper nats days the Huskys the Cunningham brothers rode at the big barrabool track were awesome, one year a copper clocked one on the long downhill straight after horsepower hill at 130kmh.

Same here I was on a Lyndon Heffernan Coffs Harbour ride where belly was on a CRF250X and was going past all the boys on 450's like they were on pw50's - a great rider even in his twilight years!

I was being a bit sarcastic Ted, I forgot to put in the appropriate rolling eyes smiley face ::).
It's a good idea though, there's shitloads of good XR's Husy's, KTM's and even ATK''s to go around.
