34mm fork oil level
« on: April 02, 2011, 11:00:41 pm »
I haven't done anything with these forks for years so I'm a little rusty. What oil capacity do you MX/YZA guys recommend?
I've used 160ml of 10wt ATF in one pair but they feel a tad mushy. Whats a good oil height level on compressed forks?

Thanks John...I'm probably better going with 20wt being a big 'ol boy. BTW, have you ever used 34mm TM 250/400 Suzuki springs in Yamaha forks? A mate in the US reckoned the dirt track guys used them to get a bit of extra preload as they're an inch or so longer than the Yamaha stockers.

Arent TMs 35mm ?? so they would be too wide ?

i do no they use the tripples though as the fit straigh in the trackmaster/ champion frame and acept the 35mm betors straight in.

OK did the deed, pulled a TM 250 spring and stuffed it in a YZA fork set.  Goes in fine but sits out at least 50mm, could get the goki or the TM tube bolt back in there was way too much comp to get a thread started.
IF you where to fit them i would think you would have to cut a couple of coils out back to say 1inch outside.
Also it looks to be close to coil binding when i forced it down, so id be checking that was well.  But the answer is yes its physically slides in the tube.

Freaky, John....I've done it already, I've had the TM springs in for a week with no problems. I was only asking to see if anyone else had heard of that particular mod. The springs only poke out about 20mm, but my springs are aftermarket Vintage Iron jobbies made for '73/4 250/400 according to the packaging.
It's a bit stiff getting the fork cap on but no major effort. The forks are a bit stiff for MX but these are on my dirt tracker so no problems.

NO probs, just said i would do it, so it did.

On my YZa forks i measured them at 50mm outside with the springs from a 75 TM.  Handy to know/see they fit though.
Although I have been looking to see if the DT1/MX250 etc are any differances in each models.  Im trying to get up to 42kg but with  softer coils and see if i can get a plusher ride up front.
